Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, 1998

Hunter S. Thompson was a great man and can only be portrayed correctly through Johnny Depp. This movie defines a generation and shows us what goes through the mind of a great journalist. It's also funny as Hell.

I think Terry Gilliam is a brilliant director. However, this is one of the worst movies I've ever seen! I was really dissapointed. I realize the viewer is supposed to be seeing things through the eyes of the characters' drug-induced haze, but I found it was far too disjointed and confusing.

Wow. This is a powerful movie that packs a punch, emotionally and psychologically speaking. Never has a movie illustrated so well the lost potential of the energy of the sixties. I was moved in a way that I would not have thought possible by the thought of all that power, all that will, ultimately wasted because so many people became frustrated at the lack of change in our society, and turned to drugs as an escape route. These ideas and abstractions are amplified to the point of being easily visible through the insane antics and incredible acting of the two main characters, Duke and his attorney. While many feel that the film is a message about drugs, using the seventies as a backdrop, I feel that the film is instead ultimately about the seventies, with drug use as a prominent background point. All told, this is one of the best films I have ever seen. Certainly top 20 material, possibly higher.

Johnney Depp fully immerses himself into the role of Hunter S. Thompson, famous writer, druggie and eccentric. Beside his cronie and 'lawyer', played by a seriously never-better Benecio del Toro, the two embark on an indescribably awkward, impossible and drug-fueled frenzy in Las Vegas and surrounding territory. The zany ride is so off-the-wall, so completely immersive that a viewer can be made dizzy not only by the performances but by director Terry Gilliam's woozy and slanting camera angles and ominously filtered lighting. The set design, as well, is often littered with the odd and bizarre paraphernalia of a lifestyle run rampant. Everything about the film has been thought about and organized to make you almost sick with it, while at the same time retaining a sense of the fun that exists at the outset of any planned rampage.
