Would have been much better as 2 films. The Mexican illegals working in the packing plant was the most compelling of the story lines and would have been a much better and effective film by itself. The young girl and Greg Kinnear bits, while offering important information regarding the fast food industry at the retail and CEO levels, never feel developed or complete as a narrative.

What a waste. They managed to turn a fascinating and enlightening nonfiction book into a dull disjointed drama that is not interesting or funny. This would have been much more effective as a documentary that more closely followed the book.

I enjoyed the nonfiction book thoroughly (great companion to Omnivore's Dilemma), to the point where I won't eat burgers ulness it's In 'N' Out. This movie fictionalizes the book, condensing its major points, making it more entertaining than a straight-up "Inconvenient Truth" presentation. Well worth watching, as well as reading.

I haven't read the book, but this movie is a preachy melodrama which thinks it can teach us a lesson by painting everything with big broad strokes. Want to show a fast food company as evil? How about villainous meat processing higher-ups who grope the poor immigrant workers and get them addicted to drugs to take sexual advantage of them? How about a human resource department that shrugs when a man falls into a meat grinder--all because the man was on drugs he would've never experienced if he had only stayed in Mexico? How about a diatribe from Bruce Willis about how it doesn't matter if there's feces in meat because we're American, dammit (oh, and all the corporate suits in charge of the hamburgers are cheating on their spouses)? This all leads to the big ending, in which we actually get to see cows slaughtered. Yay. This is easily Richard Linklater's clumsiest film.

Similar to some fast food, Fast Food Nation is tasty, yet not filling. Unlike the non-fiction book from which this fictional story is loosely based, there is no clear, pointed direction to the story. From the list of guest stars it's obvious that many actors wanted to get on the bandwagon with Fast Food Nation.
Yet, just what was the bandwagon and where was it going? Like an egg in a microwave Fast Food Nation exploded into hundreds of little bits, each part of the whole, but so fractured and damaged I couldn't tell what the original was supposed to be. Certainly, it wasn't an accurate re-telling of the best-selling non-fiction book.
If you enjoy a movie where the flow of the story periodically grinds to a halt to allow preaching, you'll like Fast Food Nation. If you enjoy the type of movie where many many subplots are interwoven but never tie up the threads, you'll love Fast Food Nation.
But if you're interested in learning what the movie should have been about, read the book. In an extra on the disk the director admits that he basically dropped the message of the book for fiction -- in my opinion, not either a wise choice on his part nor particularly good fiction.
Again, if you're interested in learning what the movie should have been about, read the book. As for the movie, wait until it's on some minor cable late at night when you're not likely to see it. Then, do youself a favor and "forget" to set your TIVO to record it.

Something clearly went wrong here. What sould be 'Traffic', but about fast food, ends up playing like a dull comedy, and the multiple storylines and interlinking plot falls flat on it's face by being ostensibly unconnectable. Granted, there are moments that are truly affecting (the kill floor, the attempt to free cows) but the whole is worse than the sum of it's parts. The main failing, I believe, is the script. It is directionless and never really comes to it's point. It's hard to believe Richard Linklater directed this.

I Liked "Fast Food Nation" when it was a book. Here is the problem, that book was a remarkable piece of non-fiction. This however is not a remarkable piece of fiction. This film is too busy trying to address too many problems to coherently address any of them, or tell a story, or keep track of its characters. If you liked the book then you may want to check out some documentaries you have all ready seen such as "Super Size Me".
So why three stars? Well it was far from a disaster. The cast was very good despite the weak script. Bruce Willis, Lou Taylor Pucci, Luis Guzmán and Grg Kinnear all turn in good performances. Heck, even Wilmer Valderrama is pretty good. Is this a very lukewarm three stars? You bet it is; you can do better, you can do worse.

The book "Fast Food Nation" is non-fiction, but the movie of the same name is a feature film, with characters, plot and stories. Miraculously, the film manages to include all the dirty "facts" the book exposes, AND adds to the mix the emotional impact of engaging, believable characters and audience-involving stories. This is a superior film, one with a definite point-of-view about the food we eat and the corporate race-to-the-bottom over profits that's transforming our culture. But for once you don't have to "pay" for the politics since what you get is a totally engaging, dramatic feature film. There's even humor. Don't skip the DVD extras; they're pretty good.

BORING! This is the worst film adaptation I have ever seen. The scenes and characters only existed to espouse portions of the book. I would say it was like sitting through a lecture, but lectures can occasionally be interesting.
