The use of symbolism in this visually rich film lent a much-needed dimension to the script, including the dreamlike atmosphere as well as all the symbols of the Illuminati, Priory of Sion, Satanic cults and secret societies. But... the problem is that symbolism alone is not enough to make a film "great", even one made by the legendary Kubrick. The cinematography was gorgeous, but I found the plot flimsy and patchy. This film could have been truly great if Kubrick either spent more time on the relationship aspect of it, really developing the main characters, or just skipped the relationship talk and made it a full-on suspense thriller. But it aimed for both, and sadly neither was strong enough to make you take the story seriously... Kidman is flawless & enchanting in appearance, however her character is poorly written & inconsistent, often over-acting to make up for the lack of depth. Cruise started out surprisingly strong & enjoyably subtle, but, like the story itself, got wobbly as things unfolded and was all over the place. His famous (or infamous) mega-watt grin was *way* overused, so that it became more annoying & transparently manipulative than charming (I know, surprise surprise!) Still, the film was compelling enough to make you want to keep watching. I just wished we could have seen the final cut which Kubrick submitted to WB before his death, but which was never made. ~NN

I feel dirty. Is this an appropriate reaction for a movie?I FEEL DIRTY.Well I'd say it is exactly the perception Kubrick intended for the audience. The thing about Kubrick is...well he tends to plant these seeds of morality inside your head and it's your decision to nurse them, water them, and provide the nutrients necessary for the befitting plant to grow.In Eyes Wide Shut,Stanley plants desires into your brain, the desires of the characters appear as your own.Throughout the film I took full responsibility for every sexual outcome thrown in the path of Dr. Harford(played by Cruise).I assumed the whole clump of events pieced together occurred because I thought I desired it,but I was not at fault, the director wanted me to think this and so it happened.
Oh yes my friends,I had control not of the reigns nor of the wheel.Mr. Stanley Kubrick was pulling the strings once more and this time through the storytelling of his servants,Cruise and Kidman.Alice Harford(Kidman)informs her husband that she had a moment of lust with another man that never quite was.Huh,now doesn't somebody feel used? So,Dr. Harford goes in search of something a little more exotic than his humble extravagant life will permit. His late night stroll of sexual exploration takes off and my guilt kicks in.I'm sorry Dr. Harford,I'm afraid my delinquent thoughts have ruined your good time.
The direction of the mastermind behind the camera adds to the depth of the film mysterious wonders. The story is ravishingly written with a style intended for adults. The odyssey unwrapped here presents a kind of sexual nature that's within us all that only unveils itself when faced with the decision to bring it out.The characters displayed come purely from a dream whether they were mine or the writer's.With an excellently crafted screenplay and just as devilish acting to follow,it's no wonder this film maker is so popular.

kept me hypnotized
I disagree with Bobby: in my opinion Eyes Wide Shut is a brilliant cinematic work of art. Kubrick wasn't only a great director but a great scriptwriter as well, and made a hallucinatory fascinating film about sex, obsession and infidelity. go for it.
