Encounters At the End of the World, 2007

Existential angst gets a massive power-up thanks to Herzog. Fears and sorrows previously limited to individuals now apply to civilizations, species, planets and entire universes. Killer beauty movie.

Herzog doesn’t try to be objective or ease us into the realities of where our world is headed. He tells it as bluntly as possible. Here are glorious images of a beautiful world untouched by mankind. Look what we’ve destroyed and what we’ll soon not see again. The film could easily be broken into a three-part miniseries. There’s the first third, which is entirely about the people living and working at the South Pole. The second third consists of the scientific work, and the ending sends the final message incase you missed it. Encounters at the End of the World is endlessly interesting, but not necessarily entertaining. It’s not like Grizzly Man, where we couldn’t get enough of Timothy Treadwell. This is similar to the “Planet Earth” series the Discovery Channel aired, but still more entertaining. There’s no human subject to follow, just nature, which makes it a little more difficult to stay completely focused. It wouldn’t be hard to take breaks throughout, and you don’t have to fear getting lost if you miss something. Herzog is also a bit preachy, but not so overwhelmingly that we’re annoyed. Four stars.

This was not a film that blew me away in a really visceral way. Yet, after each scene I was more and more enthralled by the mystical community that exists at the end of the world. Herzog presents a community of scientists and vagabonds that have found themselves in one of the most inhospitable climates in the world. Some scenes are beautiful some are interesting but what really carries this movie forward is Herzog's inquiring mind. This is a documentary in the sense that it is documenting Herzog's experience. a wonderful film. In retrospect there wasn't a single moment where I was not completely invested in the characters and scenery being presented and for that i gave this movie 5 stars.
