Eden Log, 2007

There's a tree growing underground. It's sap is a new renewable energy source. The tree doesn't want to be an energy source, so it starts making a toxin which infects the workers in this secret underground complex and turns them into mutant monsters. A guy wakes up in the mud (Eden, Adam, get it?) and he's trying to escape from the dark into the light. We go with him on a snore-inspiring journey that might have made an interesting short film but is instead stretched into an interminable hour and a half of shadow, poorly-resolved imagery, grunting noises and mud. Yes, it's an allegory for the evolution of mankind. No, it's not a good film. In fact it's barely watchable. There's very little action through most of it and not much of a story, so it's padded thickly with scenes of lights flashing on-and-off, with fight scenes between hero and monsters that are shot with a jerky camera that seems at time to be focusing randomly on various objects in rapid succession, and with guttural, ape-like noises. To have an interesting concept alone does not make a good film; the execution is more important, and this is executed very badly. Instantly forgettable, tedious and pretentious while lacking the budget and talent to pull it together, "Eden Log" starts out in the mud and remains there for 90 loooooooong minutes.
