Basically an hour and a half of two guys smoking pot and riding motorcycles. Granted, it is illuminating as far as the decade was concerned, but it hasnt aged well at all. Its a museum piece meant for those people from this time period, and I cant honestly believe that it offers anything to a modern audience. And by the way, I was glad when the twist at the end happened...after all, it meant the movie was over.

4/10Disappointing
Easy Rider follows two bikers across the country. Theyve just successfully smuggled drugs into the country and now theyre riding from LA to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Imagine two men on motorcycles driving across the country. Got that mental image? Well, now you dont have to watch the movie. Look at all the time I just saved you!
The story is slow and seems to have no point. The main characters have no goals, no ambitions, which is true to their hippie ideals. They are free in the sense that they have no responsibilities. They roam the country, surviving off others good will. They pass a commune of fellow hippies who are starving because they dont know how to farm, but want to live off the land. Yet the nomadic bikers take the hippies handouts anyways.
Maybe my lack of acceptance of the main characters morals and ideals ensures that I am not a member of Easy Riders target audience, and thats why I didnt enjoy it. The acting isnt bad, but theres not a whole lot to the characters. Aside from Jack Nicholson, Easy Rider is bland and boring. Im sure it makes some very important statements and observations about the time period and the attitude of the nation, but I was bored.

What to say about this that hasn't already been said? How about this: the trippy acid scene is one of the best, well-wrought things ever caught on camera, the end of the film is beautiful and painful and nostalgic and clever and above all an indictment of all you hold dear, Dennis Hopper is better in this than Jack Nicholson and that will never happen again in anything, the film has a singleness of vision and a clarity of purpose that can only be found in 70s cinema or at least rarely outside of that decade. Watch this thing.

Easy Rider
an essential 60's movie that deals with freedom perhaps more than anything else. try this one along with some "grateful dead" album if you're stressed out. works like magic
