Boring and slow-moving story line. Most of the dialoge is in Russian with no subtitles. No Beggining, no plot, no ending. Outlines some small time paranoid crooks that wouldnt know an underworld if it bit them on their knob. Dont waste your time...

Well acted, but the story was just not engaging to me at all. Illustrative and penetrating as a study of what life must be like inside the Russian Mafia and it certainly is shocking as an expose, but storytelling wise, I don't know.

I really liked this movie. There is some pretty graphic violence, so you'll need to be forewarned of that first, but for me it was part of the story and fit well. Viggo's performance is incredible, and the subtle quiet strength he portrays is...

I really liked this movie. There is some pretty graphic violence, so you'll need to be forewarned of that first, but for me it was part of the story and fit well. Viggo's performance is incredible, and the subtle quiet strength he portrays is perfect. The rest of the cast also is strong, although Watt's portroyal pales in comparison to the rest of them. The story moved along perfectly and kept me with it throughout, never allowing me to get bored or become distracted. I didn't see the twist in the story coming and liked that it gave a realistic ending rather than a normal hollywood happy ending. If you can handle violence, I'd highly recommend this movie.

"Eastern Promises" was a good movie but it somehow didn't take us (the audience) all the way it could have. The acting on everyone's part in the film was done very well but I believe would of been done better if the story evolved just a little bit...

The acting on everyone's part in the film was done very well but I believe would of been done better if the story evolved just a little bit more. "A History of Violence" pulled all the punches without stopping, slowing down, or verring off course but somehow "Eastern Promises" didn't provide all of the same things. Without adding any spoilers here, in my opinion "Donnie Brasco" and "The Departed" depicted the Italian Mob and Irish Mob with storyline twists better than Eastern Promises did with the Russian Mob.

Viggo Mortensen should get an Oscar Nod for this performance. I was completely into this film but regret knowing too much about it. So if you can avoid reading anything about this film then you will enjoy the experience even more. THe film does...

Viggo Mortensen should get an Oscar Nod for this performance. I was completely into this film but regret knowing too much about it. So if you can avoid reading anything about this film then you will enjoy the experience even more. THe film does have some violent moments but is not a film just about violence but about the characters in this underworld. The only negative about Eastern Promises was that the film was roughtly an hour and half. It seems that some movies with nothing to them (Pirates part 3) go on for 3 plus hours but a movie like this one which is so rich leaves us in cold and wanting much more than is given. I guess that's a good thing as opposed to everything being shown to us the viewer. Overall I think this movie is one of the better films of 07 and worthy of the hype it recieved.

Lives up to the expectations Cronenberg set with 'A History of Violence'; his new style (that of subdued and quiet dread) is better and even more developed in this film. Viggo Mortensen's performance could not be more different than his performance in 'Violence', but it is every bit as exquisite and nuanced. You won't even realize you've been drawn into this dark, silent world until it's too late; by the time the credits roll, you are more invested in it than your waking life would normally allow.

I find people falling all over themselves in praise of this film and for the life of me I can not figure out why. I can not find a reason why this film adds anything to the gangster genre other than Russian accents and an overzealous sound engineer....

I find people falling all over themselves in praise of this film and for the life of me I can not figure out why. I can not find a reason why this film adds anything to the gangster genre other than Russian accents and an overzealous sound engineer. All the performances are serviceable but not stellar. The script is interesting, but in no way surprising. The problem is that David Cronenberg is relying on violence to shock us but no one is shocked by violence from Cronenberg.
