This movie was really interesting for the most part but I wasn't a fan of the ending. I had to read some reviews to fully understand the ending and it sounds pretty interesting but I don't think most people would understand the ending without reading an explanation first, though some people did get it so it depends. Even after understanding it I still would have preferred a different ending though.

A Real Work Of Art
For me , Some movies are just unique . " Fight Club " , " Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind " and " Amelie " to name a few . today , I add " Donnie Darko " to these list .
This Mind-Blowing movie is a masterful mixture of Psychology Thrillers , romance comedies , satire of 80s american culture and elements of surreal Horror movies with lovely characters and a never-experience-it-berfore atmospher and at the end of the movie , we find out that we just have seen one of the best movies about loneliness and Depressing moods of being a teenager .
One of the most powerful Cult films of 00s and a real Work Of Art .

This is something different
This is one movie that will blow your mind. It's very strange and unexpected, but in a good way. When the movie ends you stay with a craving for more.. but there isn't any.. so you watch it again.

There's no there there. Really, there isn't. I _do_ like 'different' movies. I _do_ like mind-bending plots. I like movies that I find myself thinking about weeks and months later. This is not one of those movies. I sat through to the end hoping for a pay-off and did not find one. I did not watch the extras because the movie left such a bad taste in my mouth. Perhaps that was my downfall. Otherwise, I just do not see why the other member reviews are so favorable.

A tight storyline that doesn't reveal much until the end, yet it kept us mesmerized wanting more. I enjoyed the movie, but found myself thinking about it more and more in the days afterwards. Strange..indeed. Enjoyable...definitely. The cast is great and if you like commentary, it is clear that the cast has tremendous respect for the script and really enjoyed making this movie.

Set to Tears for Fear's unusually substantial 1985 single "Head Over Heels," the back-to-school scene brought a houseful of my noisy guests to an awed hush. That Richard Kelly has spun such a beautiful movie, with its slow-motion amateur dancers, Fibonacci spirals, and suburban secrets, out of such a ridiculous plot (it will not be giving too much away to reveal that the hero learns he must be impaled by a jet engine to save the world) announces the arrival of a major directorial talent.

9/10Amazing
Every few years a young filmaker unloads on the unsuspecting public a movie far too well-done for his/her experience - a film that succeeds both as an original personal vision and a polished, challenging piece of celluloid. Like Hal Hartley's 'Unbelievable Truth', Scorcese's 'Who's That Knockin' At My Door', and Peter Jackson's 'Heavenly Creatures', Kelley has fashioned a mini-masterpiece, both in content and design. As an added bonus, we even get to see Patrick Swayze act, essaying a role that, at least in spirit, echoes Tom Cruise's splendid turn in Anderson's magnificent 'Magnolia'. Yes - you read that right. Swayze actually acts... in a role prpbably no one could ever have imagined him playing. I am surprised this film didn't received the same kind of buzz that propelled 'Memento' in the Zeitgeist of 2001.

Such a great film--very interesting and important to listen to the director discuss the deleted scenes. Had it been better marketed it would have been a smash. If you liked "Memento" you'll love this.

This movie asks a strange question and gives an in-depth and stylized answer in a film medium, an answer that is both sci-fi and spiritual. What if the young man that everyone sees as a "troubled teen" is really troubled by the actual things he is able to witness?
Is Donnie a superhero or Jesus Christ figure? A bit of both, if there really needs to be a distinction. Donnie calls Cunningham the anti-Christ. That could be the best insult he could come up with, or you could say that it takes a Christ to see the anti-Christ. When his soon-to-be girlfriend asks him, "What kind of name is that? Sounds like some kind of a superhero", he retorts, "What makes you think I'm not a superhero?" This is the hidden reality of the story. Donnie and his dad's schoolmate Frank are apparently superheroes, albeit unsung. In the movie theater Donnie taunts Frank by asking why is he in that stupid bunny suit. Frank replies, "Why are you in that stupid man suit?" No mere mortal, Donnie.
Why does Donnie like "Chut up" Cherita? He knows she is in pain. He knows that the world is not a fair place, where the fair-looking people have all the advantages. Contrast his little sister's performance with that of Cherita at the school theater night. Donnie cares for the downtrodden, the unsightly. But on a deeper level, his interactions with Cherita show us a larger purpose; his time travel seems to have a meaningful impact on those he leaves behind. The right-wing radical teacher seems to recognize some error in her ways, the awful Cunningham seems to realize he dodged a bullet, Cherita smiles, assured of the promise that life will be better for her.
Why are Donnie's last words "I'm going home"? He is obviously going to his bedroom in his house. But on the level of the Christ myth, he is going to Heaven, from whence you could imagine him having come to earth.

This movie reminds of the Strawbs song "Heavy Disguise" with the line "…fools must pretend to be wise we've a faith that we use a heavy disguise." Originally the song was written about religion, but it fits this movie. The movie claims to be special in its portrayal of time-travel but in fact, it just brings back the biggest clichés, creating an unbelievable illusion of time-travel only to be surpassed by Heroes' first season in its simplicity and stupidity. Also the movie says nothing about growing up. I can see why it's described as a coming of age film, but it's just an unsuccessfull telling of a boring teenager's boring story. My suggestion: leave this movie and have a movie night with these 3 movies instead: Watch "12 Monkeys" for its wonderful portrayal of time-travel. Watch "Almost Famous" to get a wonderful coming of age film with true depth. Lastly, watch "Jarhead" to see how Jake Gyllenhaal can portray a tormented character.
