The cinematograpy was fantastic, years ahead of its time. That still couldn't make me care about the characters or the plot that often forgot to move forward for periods of time that seemed like hours. This movie was described to me as a very romantic movie. I found it to fall quite short of that. Unfaithfulness isn't very romantic.

I really wanted to like this film but there were multiple factors which led to my ultimate dislike of it. For one, it just seemed to meander. I would have liked that it focused more on the Bolshevik revolution or more on the love story (either/or). I would have also appreciated more indicators to the exact time periods since the movie jumped around a bit.

I wanted to sympathize with Omar Sharif's character but, and I'm no prude, when his character had an extraneous love affair with "Lara" I lost interest in him. The love affair seemed unnatural and forced.

I wonder how much of the film was anti-communist propaganda? Ultimately, since this was not a historical film per se and a love story, the viewer has to really connect with the central characters rather than the scenic backdrops and time period; and I couldn't really connect with most of the characters. The English accents didn't help matters, since we're supposed to believe they're Russian.

A gorgeously captured film, with some intriguing characters, was ultimately a let down. The music was repetitive and overused, as well. The main theme was very beautiful but by the thirtieth or so time I heard it I was sick of hearing it.

The epic theme seemed forced and convoluted. A big disappointment.

The more David Lean films I see, the more I love his work. He has the amazing ability to take a 3.5 hour movie and make it feel like barely an hour. I never get bored watching his films, no matter how long they are. He tells a story like a master, and the way he shoots his films keeps them visually interesting as well. It's not really something that can be described in words, you just have to see it...
The acting here was absolutely phenomenal. Even the minor characters were portrayed flawlessly. Omar Sharif was perfect in the lead role, with Julie Christie at his side. Alec Guinness was a fantastic choice for the characters who narrates much of the story. His voice, along with an amazing script, really set the tone for the movie.
As usual, David Lean's direction was outstanding. The cinematography was similarly impressive, effectively utilizing war torn cities, cramped interiors, and the vast Russian countryside. Some of the exterior shots of the farmhouse during a cold winter's night were breathtaking.
The DVD was also impressive. The audio was good, but not great. The audio was mostly clear and understandable, although a few sequences could have been a little cleaner. The video was suprisingly clear and vivid. I nearly forgot I was watching a movie filmed 40 years ago! The print was clean with no visible damage. The detail was astounding and the colors leaped off the screen. I noticed a few instances of what appeared to be some minor edge enhancement, but it wasn't obvious enough to be distracting.
Doctor Zhivago has a lot going for it and it's hard not to like. The script and acting are top notch, and David Lean brings the story to life in the way only his accomplished hands can. At 3.5 hours long it may seem a little daunting, but trust me, it's anything but boring.
