Leave your brain at the door
The graphics were amazing and the action was good but the story was just ok and the super stereotypes were super annoying.

Aliens that were smart enough to create weapons way more advanced than that of the humans - weapons that couldn't even be used against themselves! Wow! Aliens that were bigger and stronger than humans. Aliens that were not afraid to be aggressive... Yet so stupid, apparently, that they traded their awesome weapons for cat food... What?? Not to mention the main guy who was perhaps the worst person ever to appear in a movie...

Also, there are several plot points that are full of holes. Like why did these aliens need to stay in the slums of South Africa if their ship was still functioning? That being said, for some reason this movie managed to remain entertaining. I hope there is a sequel to sure up the story a little bit. B-

What I liked most about this movie was how the aliens were portrayed. They weren't portrayed as "good" like in Avatar and they weren't portrayed as "evil" like in Aliens. They were portrayed simply as a group of species trying to survive in a strange new world. The scene that I liked the most *SPOILER* was when Chris and his friend where making the fuel cell, or whatever you want to call it, for their ship. At first I thought they were making some sort of weapon against the humans and *SPOILER* Wikus getting affected by it only strengthened my theory. Then when it was revived it was just fuel for their ship it showed me that the aliens weren't monsters, but humans beings (metaphorically speaking of course) just trying to return to their home.

District 9
This film clearly sets itself apart from the rest of the sci fi genre. It is full of originality, from the story to the POV and the camera work.
It is also hard to miss the metaphors, it is an obvious statement on discrimination and human cruelty. All this ingredients form a beautiful mix for the first two thirds of the film.
When the film starts nearing it's conclusion it degrades in to a pure action film. Loads of special effects and gun fire and virtually no story make up the better part of the last third.
In conclusion this is a 'must see' in spite of the lesser third part, because of it's originality and it's documentary-style storytelling in the rest of the film.

The movie is very well done. It's beautiful and the acting is very, very good. That said, the movie couldn't decide if it wanted to be a violent suspense movie or a view on humanity and human relationships. You couldn't enjoy the later if you were too tied up being scared for the next thing. The suspense and suspected violent act that was about to come rarely did, but it had you on the edge of your seat and therefore missing the larger and more important story. It wasn't too violent, but every 5 minutes you were led to believe that you were about to jump out of your seat. That killed it for me.

The evil corporation in this movie kind of reminds me of Netphlix. I dont usually write protest reviews, but its getting silly now. First they took away notebook and the rest- I didnt say anything. They said friend features were unpopular, which is ludicrous, but I still didnt say anything. They took away favorites, top ten lists, and any way to follow other users, yet I still remained stoic. But guess what they took away today? Apostrophes! Thats why my post looks like its written by a six year old. After the ridiculous 24 hour wait, my last review showed up with no apostrophes and I cant correct it. It wont let me. Apparently apostrophes were an unpopular feature too. Commas are probably next, followed by all the other unpopular punctuation marks. Then capital letters. I think Netphlix is going dismantle their user input one letter at a time. Eventually we will have write reviews using only the letter j, and then, one day, it will be over. Poof! I apologize for this non-review, I just cant take it anymore. Ive been thoroughly demoralized and Im lashing out.

District 9 is not a movie; it is a commentary about humanity. It is an eye-opening, honest look at how we, as humans, refuse to accept or even tolerate something different. Forget that the film is literally about aliens whose ship ran out of fuel over Johannesburg, South Africa. Forget that their ship was invaded by humans after weeks of inactivity. Forget, also, that the humans initially welcomed the aliens to Earth, giving them food and shelter. Remember this: Humans have always and will always take advantage of the weak. That's what District 9 is really about. Once the aliens are taken from the ship, they're put into small shelters and given food rations until their health is restored. Then, the humans start to feed. They force the aliens to trade weapons technology for food, scavenge the dead ones and perform medical experiments and begin to act out civil rights atrocities. The aliens, meanwhile, are just trying to survive. This lasts 20 years until the Multi-National United (MNU) organization decides to move the 1.5 million aliens housed in these slums 200 kilometers away from the city. Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley) heads the project until he is exposed to alien biotechnology. The accident causes Merwe's DNA to slowly transition from human to alien. Then the fun begins as Merwe struggles to fight the humans who are turning on him and the aliens who don't trust him. His struggle and how his body reacts to his exposure make District 9 one of the most thought-provoking science-fiction films in years. tinyurl.com/filmfan

Take away the music, unnecessary slow-downs, the what about your boys, F words, and horrible action movie conventions and you have a perfect film. D9 does what the most important films should; redress the most critical issues of an era and make people think while they are being entertained. I was privied to many reviews and opinions so I didnt go in cold, but people that dont get this flick are why we are in a mess.

The special effects alone, barring almost everything else, make this movie transcendent, It is decently written. The Prawn ghetto and locals are so believable you forget it a movie, and get the feeling your watching a documentary, or a news program. The creatures and the technology it took to create them are just astonishing. It is very violent, but doesnt seem at all gratuitous. I LOVE Sci Fi, so I was in hog heaven with yet another Peter Jackson marvel.
