Stick with the book.
I also read the book, and loved it. However, I don't understand why movies make meaningless changes. I mean, how do you just leave out his son? I think I liked it until about 15 minutes in (except for RZA who, looking back, was the only thing I actually liked), but then they changed so much that I think people who actually read the book shouldn't waste their time with the movie.
I figure they changed scenes because they don't want a long movie, but I think if they kept the plot closer to the book, it would keep viewers interested longer than just under 2 hours.

Stereotypical characters, miscast actors (several of whom either chew shamelessly on the scenery or sleepwalk through their lines), wooden direction, huge plot holes and inconsistencies and a twist that you'll probably see one-third of the way...

I only watched this movie because I had just finished reading the book. So, obviously, I have compared the two and I must say, they really are quite similar. Sure, there are some differences but they aren't so huge that they ruin the movie. Charles Schine misses his train train one day and ends up catching the next one. Enter: Lucinda. Charles and Lucinda hit it off almost instantaneously which soon leads to a one night stand. Without giving too much away, something totally unexpected happens that leads to a terrifying chain of events. Spooky personified, with a lot of twists and turns. Good solid film with great performances. 3.5 stars.

So, yeah, you will have to sit through one hour of "Gimme my money" and "I'll kill her if you don't" to get to the twists. It's very cliched, good cop bad cop stuff, but the twist is a pretty good one. That is, if you make it to the twist. You might be too bored to care by the time it comes. Clive Owen is good as always in this, but I probably wouldn't watch this again.

This is a great movie. If you don't like it, that's because you're expecting it to hit all the right formula points and to give you exactly what you're used to, when you are ready for it. Guess what? This movie is NOT by-the-book, it is NOT cookie-cutter, and it WILL make you feel uncomfortable, both in it's pacing and it's subject matter. It is NOT 'Fracture', 'Murder By Numbers' or 'The Bone Collector'. It is absolutely it's own animal, working on it's own terms toward a resolution and a thematic catharsis unlike what you normally see at your local megaplex. I invite you to think about the films you are watching and applaud them when they do not speak down to you.
