Death Race is a non-stop action thrill ride. Most of the movie is racing and shooting, just as it should be. Excellent special effects and the cars look terrific. If you like pure, adrenaline soaked, high octane action, check this movie out.

Two-dimensional characters and a very predictable story are redeemed by some fairly tense racing sequences, decent photography, and some cringe-worthy gore to produce a watchable, if forgettable, little popcorn-munching actioner. [Unrated version]

It's nothing but a music video on the screen when it comes down to it. You take a 5 minute setup for Statham's wife to be eliminated then the rest just the race with no exposition anywhere in between. No, I wasn't expecting Shakespeare but having a bit more than the race would have been cool. About as mindless and idiotic as the Running Man except in cars.

So I was really pumped for some outrageous action when I went to see this movie and what did I get? Exactly what I was looking for with a little bit of reality thrown in. The gist of this movie is prisoners are given the option to race against other prisoners and if they win 5 races they get to go free not matter what their crime was while being broadcast live over the internet. The cars are old junkers that are given to the prisoners to fix up with guns, armor, spikes, etc. The prison itself is on an island right off of a very narrow bridge and within the prison is a track that the prisoners compete in. A new guy is brought into the prison (Jason Statham) after he is accused of murdering his wife. He has experience in racing and is to pretend he is a former racer, Frankenstein, who is 1 race away of winning his freedom.
So you are probably wondering where the reality comes into all of this. The movie is set in the near future right after the U.S. economy collapses. Unemployment sky rockets and as a result the crime rate also raises. In order to control the prison population Death Race is introduced as a way to kill off prisoners and possibly set some free. These races are broadcast over the internet and for a sum of money the public can buy a subscription; much like in real life when people pre-order fights on paperview. At first look this movie seems over the top but if you dive in a little bit you come to realize that all of this could actually happen.

4/10Disappointing
Set in the near future, DEATH RACE takes a preposterous plot, adds nearly non-stop action, and mixes in a handful of paper-thin stereotypes for characters. The central situation is that the winner of an armed auto race at a penitentiary gets to go free, if he survives; and the psycho warden makes money selling the TV rights to a craven public. And how could I forget: Jason Stratham, framed for murdering his wife, is reluctantly tapped to race for the warden. Did I mention that the actual killer of his saintly wife is a race competitor, too? Convenient! This all sets the scene for extremely quick-on-the eye action, basically consisting of cars shooting at and crashing into other cars, interspersed with cartoonish violence in scenes back at the prison. Still, it is not a terrible movie and sort of goes by pretty fast. Add a star if, like me, you are a fan of Ian McShane and are encouraged to see him making money.
