Profile of The White Ribbon
The mood of The White Ribbon is disturbing, bleak, and tense. The plot centers around outward appearances, village life, and mischievous children. It is a drama, foreign, and period movie. Stylistically, The White Ribbon includes a voice over and is epic. In approach, it is serious and realistic. The pacing is slow. The White Ribbon takes place, at least partly, in a village. The setting is Germany. It happens in the 1910s. Visually, The White Ribbon is black and white. The movie is known for being a Golden Globe winner, a Cannes festival winner, and essential viewing. Note that it includes sexual content and violent content.
Summary of The White Ribbon
Controversy-courting director Michael Haneke (CACHÉ) earned the Palm d’Or at Cannes in 2009 for this arresting drama set just before World War I. In a small German village, a number of unexplained accidents beset the schoolchildren and their parents. Though they at first appear coincidental, it begins to seem that they are not, in fact, accidents at all.
