Unwavering commitment to raw brush-strokes is a feast
If you enjoy your movies with 'autotune' you will be highly disappointed. This movie delivers on every level. A delivery that defies everything you have come to expect from the an otherwise largely processed, autotuned movie landscape. Hundreds of millions have lived and died without coming away with this 140 minute experience. Story telling in the hands of an artist is a rare feast indeed.

When You Dance in the Dark, You Stumble...A Lot!
Rarely have I seen a film that I loathe so much that I just cringe every time I hear it's name. "Dancer in the Dark" is one of the most agonizing movie-watching experiences I have ever had. It slaps you in the face by alienating you and indulging in inexplicable and mean-spirited sub-plots. Part of the attraction for this film may be if you like Bjork or not. Well, I cannot stand her. I find her voice to be absolutely degrading, and her performance to be labored and confused. Characters come in and out and we never really know what their deals are, the musical numbers, while very well shot and choreographed, are irritating and self-conscious, and the apparent Washington D.C. setting looks like a place in some Western European country. The handheld camera work is also cloying and left me feeling quite nauseous. The film is overlong at 2 hours and 20 minutes, and the ending is just torturous, preposterous, and a bit misogynistic. Lars von Trier is a very talented director, but his and Bjork's pretentiousness go right above their heads, and we're left with a boring, ludicrous mess. One of the worst films I've ever seen.

Solid
As both a Bjork and Lars Von Trier fan prior to watching this, I had high expectations. The movie was great, but not spectacular. If you don't tear up at the end of this film, you officially have no soul.

This is probably the best movie ever made. And I'm not kidding. I have liked other independent films a lot, but this one is the best.

An absolutley amazing performance by Bjork, and a storyline that wrung emotion out of me I didn't know I had. And yet, having seen it, I wish I could go back and unsee it. Rage and a sense of impotence grew as the movie progressed, and I watched the last 5 minutes in horrified disbelief. If I ever decided to kill myself, watching this movie before I go would validate the belief that life no longer had meaning and in fact was hell on earth.

This movie is so out of the ordinary there was a moment or two I thought it bordered on the bizarre. (Such as being made mainly by Scandinavians but set in a small town Washington state in 1964. A couple days after seeing it, I learned it was made by the director of "Breaking the Waves." I am glad I found out afterward, because I thought that movie had some very interesting stuff in it but was exhausting and meandering, and that might have dissuaded me from seeing the much better "Dancer.") But it is just a truly distinctive story, heart-wrenching and heartbreaking at times. Really sort of a melodramatic blue-collar story but with so many contrasting tones, it never droops to the monochromatic dirty-kitchen-sink genre. How can it with an amazing performance by Bjork (totally unknown to me), a startling but effective appearance by Catherine Deneuve and a host of great character actors? To say nothing of some of the most sublime non-intrusive musical numbers ever inserted into what is basically a non-musical movie. (They are cinema dreams transplanted to everyday surroundings.) Perhaps most people will hate it, but it had a lot of truth and appealing moments in its lengthy, proudly idiosyncratic narrative about humble people trying to find the decency to celebrate--not let themselves get ground up by--the everyday reality of the American dream machine. 5.09

I like Bjork. I really loved the soundtrack CD from this movie. But they rerecorded it rather than taking it from the film. Good call. The musical numbers in the movies are not nearly as good as they are on the CD. I thought the movies was kind of dull. It was supposed to be depressing but the woman did actually commit the crime. I think she got what she deserved. It was very poorly edited too. I got the feeling that they would go over one actor's lines, he would say the line and then they would cut the filming and repeat for each line. Could the actors not remember their lines for longer than a few minutes? The plot was silly. Selma was not a charming Amelie-esque character. She was a blind, retarded, schizophrenic, homocidal, androphobic looser who couldnt hold a job and had no regard for her personal safety. The end was the best part.

A musical. Yes, you heard me, this movie is a musical, but unlike any other musical you have ever seen (or ever will see again).
If you have any heart at all, this film will make you bleed. The sense of loss and of regret and of PAIN will stay with you for a long time to come.
Bjork is...truly amazing here. I don't know why she doesn't just switch to acting. I'd see her in any part she'd care to play. I couldn't stop...looking at her through the whole movie. She is beautiful (yes, you heard me, BEAUTIFUL) and boy can she sing, but what grabs you is the character and her ability to jump right in with both feet and play the living HELL out of it.
..."But did it need to be a musical?" I hear you asking. Yes. Yes, I think it did. I don't think any other medium would have brought out the lead character's innate joy and ability to rise above herself and her circumstances. All musicals end happily, right? As long as you leave at the second to last song. Don't do that here though, or you'll miss some astounding acting. ....and trust me, you don't want to miss a second.

What a great film. Great story, great acting. At first, the digital video camera work reminded me of "Blair Witch"...which gives it a very raw, and real, dizzing effect...but this just engages you more into their world. Then their is Selma's internal world, which is brilliant. Being a fan of Bjork, I really enjoyed these particular sequences. The story is heartbreaking, but the contrast to what is going on in Selma's head, is really captivating....Like trying to smile while you are crying. Heavy, but a very good, unique movie.
