It's like they were trying to reproduce the magic of Little Miss Sunshine but they missed the mark. There was nothing glaringly bad or good about this movie which leaves it in a no-mans land. The love connection was never really developed on screen. Dane Cook's character unexplainably goes from broken-hearted to jerk in a very short time. Cheesy/typical scenes and dialog are dispersed throughout even though it was attempting to feel "indie". Humor was surprisingly absent in spite of the casting. Ultimately Dan's real life isn't much more interesting than your own real life.

I gave it three starts, because two would mean that I did not like it. I liked it enough to feel that my time watching it was not a waste, but I would never watch it again.

Oh, please! How many cliched, sappy, "family togetherness" scenes can one movie contain? A crossword puzzle contest? Family aerobics? Hide and seek with the adults & kids? One of this would have been charming, but combined and then topped off with the obligatory family touch football game? Come on!
This excellent cast (and soundtrack) could have been so much more.

Amazingly hilarious! One of Steve Carell's best works so far. This movie has a wonderful script which seems to be acted very well by most of the lead cast. I would like to know why Dane Cook was casted into one of the leads. Although Cook does do an average job of playing the "snot role" in a film I didn't really feel that Cook gave his best preformance in this film. All around a great film. Also there are a lot of sexual references in the film that you may/not find suitable for young children although most of the sexual humor isn't by any means "in-your-face" were it's constantly direct sexual jokes. The jokes are often hidden by some meanings that children will find humorous without having any idea of what it means.

I think my expectations were a little too high for this one. I really love Steve Carell, and I just didn't feel like they used enough of his unique brand of humor. He's really not bad in a more serious, dramatic role, but I guess I've got him pigeon-holed in my mind. There's really good chemistry among all the actors in this film, and there are some really terrific moments, but honestly I was a little bored. I will add though that my husband really liked this movie a lot more than I did.

I don't know why, but I really hoped for more from this movie. I liked it enough to give it a solid 3 stars, although I would love to give it more. I love Steve, I love Dan, but this movie left me wanting more from them all.

I enjoyed this film more than expected and is the type of film that will get better over time. Dan In Real Life is a small film about family, loss and love but like life itself it has funny moments but this is not a laugh out loud comedy film. Dont be surprised it Steve Carell might one day get an oscar nod for doing these types of serious roles. Dan in Real Life just has a good vibe to it and captures a family and the home they live in. Avoid this film if you hate talking and good stroylines but give this touching film a chance and it will grow on you.

Dan in Real Life is nothing revolutionary, but it is a well-done romantic comedy. Dane Cook is surprisingly likable in the movie, with his karaoke rendition of "Let My Love Open the Door". Steve Carell and Juliet Binoche also both give good performances. The movie is just a bit depressing throughout, with a few high-points. It's not really laugh out loud, but there are some giggles here and there. It's OK, a little long, but a good showcase of everyone's talents.

If, in the first 10 minutes of this film, you don't realize that the main character, who writes a life advice column, is going to have the tables- oh-so-cleverly-turned and learn some valuable life lessons himself, then there is probably something wrong with you. The set up is so predictable as to ruin the movie, even if the rest of the movie was good (which it isn't)
There's almost no chemistry between the leads, and Steve Carell's stalker-ish behavior is embarrassing, not funny. It's hard to believe Binoche's character would have any interest in him. Then in the end it's all wrapped up so wonderful and everyone lives happily ever after. Isn't that great America!
