Cthulhu, 2007

I had high hopes for this movie as the story built. The acting is good, the cinematography is very good, and the screenplay follows the mood of Lovecraft's stories quite well. Rather than focusing on gore and outright shock, "Cthulhu" shows us hints of the horrors behind the collapse of civilization that serves as the soundtrack of the film. There's an aura of decay around everything, and at the center of it all is the town of Rivermouth to which the hero returns to execute his mother's will. His father is the leader of The Esoteric Order of Dagon, a new church dedicated to serving "the old ones." The protagonist's family has a bit of a history in this sort of thing. The story builds well, starting slowly and then ramping up into the kind of horror and madness that fans of Lovecraft will enjoy, and then... it fails to deliver. The ending cops out and we never get to actually see the horrors that are coming for us all. In essence, this movie is a tease that never delivers and the climax, such as it is, is a terrible let-down. That's too bad, because "Cthulhu" has a lot of potential. It just doesn't realize it. It's good, and it's watchable, but this film version of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" needs a better screenplay and a different ending.
