Cross of Iron, 1977

Interesting story and characters with excellent atmosphere. Coburn gives a incredibly strong and layered performance. One would wish that the battle sequences were filmed with as much clarity and precision as the dramatic scenes with dialogue - as the former are all frustratingly incomprehensible. It is also regrettable that the homosexuality of one of the officers comes across as part and parcel of his villainy. More character development and less confusing combat (as there is more than enough as it is) would have served this film well.
