The obligatory big twist isn't so clever and the characters, while well-portrayed, run too close to formula to ever pop out as real people. Still, "Criminal" is a fun ride and capably crafted. Recommended for genre fans.

Enjoyable flick, although for most of it I felt like the casting was "off", somehow. By the end I realized it was because the lead role is a tough character to pin--he's gotta be just likeable enough for you to want to watch, but at the same time, unlikeable enough for you to feel slightly uncomfortable. The ending made the movie for me, otherwise I would've rated it "ok".

Criminal was entertaining, if nothing else. It certainly wasn't a masterpiece, nor was it original. But I sat happily engrossed in front of my television for two hours, enjoying every minute. Criminal is one of those movies that I have a hard time getting too excited about, either good or bad. For almost every positive, I can find a negative.
I love John C. Reilly. In fact, he was what drew me to this film in the first place. On the other hand, he seemed a bit miscast in Criminal. He doesn't strike me as the "smooth operator" type, the kind of character you love to hate. He's just too lovable. Regardless of casting mistakes, the performances across the board were solid. Diego Luna was great as the "sidekick," even if his character seemed a bit too stereotypical for my tastes.
The plot was fun and engaging. On the flip side of that coin is its lack of originality. Not only is Criminal a remake of an Argentinean movie, it's a carbon copy of so many other heist/scam movies. Most of the twists and turns are predictable because movie goers have been seeing them for years. But I have to stress, this didn't detract from my enjoyment.
Criminal, in the end, was a very enjoyable film. And that's what we all watch movies for, right? Critically, the direction was a bit tepid and the story was unoriginal. Some of the characters were miscast, but the performances were strong. Criminal is certainly worth a look, especially if you're a fan of heist movies and the like.

I love con job movies, but Criminal needed either some more thrills, drama, or humor. I found the premise of two con men meeting in the morning and trying to pull off the biggest job of their careers in the afternoon to hard to swallow. Diego Luna did a good job or playing the young up & coming con, but John C Reilly is too likable to play one of the sorriest excuses for a human being. All in all, this is a middle of the road crime drama. (3/18/9)

surprisingly cute
a real feel-good movie. although i think there are much better films on this subject, i definitely enjoyed this one a lot. if you like cons and scams stories, you've got something to add your wish list.
