Criminal Lovers, 1999

I think that Francois Ozon just might be a next generation filmmaker. This one still has a vibe to it that one cannot quite categorize, but I give him that quality as a plus. Now, if we had a horror movie about a serially killing girl that was growing into knowing her true power and menace but then crossed paths with a more powerful, hairier monster that only wanted to love the boy she had as her plaything, well, we might have a hard time getting through it. The subject matter here will turn a lot of people off. You know how High Tension is both a psycho-horror movie (with one of the funniest endings in horror movies) and a rather crass metaphor for psycho-lesbian relationships? Well, this has another gay subtext I haven't quite decided to either chuckle at or understand yet. I'm sorry if I've played spoiler here, but I really think that it is wasted on people not to reveal these particular points. She could be a really interesting character, and should have been the focus of the film imo, but in a movie with only four actors, I suppose you have to paint the characters as vividly as possible. Ultimately showing good craft but otherwise uncomfortable film.
