Thhs may be Woody's most intelligently created film, certainly a masterpiece. It works on one level that's purely braincandy (Woody playing a loser wannabe director who stands by his principles and whines about others; Woody trying to charm his real wife Mia; the ending with the film's actual director discussing a different ending with the character that creates the ending within the film that the director finds unsatisfactory), and on an emotional one as well. It's about love, relationships between siblings, family, work. With Anjelica Huston, we have one of the most intelligent actresses in the world; with Mia, one of the most touching; with Alan Alda, one of the oddest. The tone shifts are smooth from one-liner comedy to human drama to thriller moments to the profundity of Levy (whose idealism can't even save himself). A multi-layered joy that only suffers from occasional self-importance.

Crimes and Misdemeanors
one of the more contemplative and less humorous movies by Woody Allen. beautifully deals with dishonesty and guilt.
