Coraline is as good as child thrillers get. It's engaging, suspenseful and has a great story kids and adults can simultaneously enjoy... At night, Coraline is led by hopping mice to a secret door, which opens to a portal similar to that in Being John Malkovich. The portal leads to a parallel universe where all the same people exists, except they're more colorful, livelier and have buttons for eyes. Coraline is able to stay through the night, but each morning she wakes up back in her real world bed. She immediately falls in love with the new place, despite her alternate parents having button eyes. She has fun and plays and enjoys it all, until she is propositioned to sew buttons on her eyes. If she does, she can stay forever. If she doesn't, well, her nice, fun "other mother" won't be very accommodating. Coraline transforms from a disgruntled child to unlikely, but necessary heroine as she tries to regain her normal life. She learns that her other mother made the doll and the doll's eyes are able to spy on her. It's a trap for Caroline, which the other mother uses to lure her into the parallel universe to stay. The other mother has done it all before, kidnapping kids to keep for eternity...
Coraline is at times scary, weird and creepy, even for adults. A very young child probably would be too scared at some scenes. If your kids have seen, and like, The Nightmare Before Christmas, then they will like this. Four stars.

Although a 3D theatrical release, it is hard to imagine that wouldn't detract from the exquisite, handmade feel of this stop-motion masterpiece. It's made with the look and feel of a bygone era, yet with modern day precision and craftsmanship. With an endearing, fairy tale story of a young girl, the filmmaker produced a seamlessly beautiful movie that can captivate a wide audience. The DVD extras are a must.

Coraline is one of the most inventive animated films of the last 20 years, and that's no small feat.
Coraline is a creative story about Coraline Jones, who enters a strange "otherworld" and learns a lesson along the way (Which one? Watch the movie!)
The animation here is a culmination of the history of stop-motion (In other words, Great)
If I say too much about the film, you'll probably be turned off by this review, so, in conclusion, Put this film on the top of your Queue. You won't regret it.

It really had a nice morale but it mainly great visuals. The plot is thin but serviceable. But it probably would've gotten another star if I watched it in 3D. Hope this is helpful.

From criminally under appreciated director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach comes his magnum opus of claymation, Coraline. There were times on occasion during the movie when I would suddenly remember that I was watching a claymation movie. After being assulted by computer animated movies these last several years, it is a breath of fresh air to see something so fantastical coming from something physical. There were obviously some moments where they used computer tech but it blended in so well that I never noticed. Speaking of blending in, the 3D effect in this film were perfect. It was never gimicky or drew attention to itself but only helped to enhance the experience and to put you further into the movie. Like visual effects, I think that the best 3D effects are the ones you dont notice.

"CORALINE" is adult animation -- I think young children would be frightened by its story and themes -- executed with a very high degree of imagination. The stop-action puppetry and animation is wonderful, as are the amazing sets. The story concerns a young girl who moves into a strange old house with her parents, who are too busy (she feels, as does every kid) to pay her enough attention. So she constructs/finds an alternative reality with idealized versions of her mom and dad. But are they? Enter the dark side. The story and visuals make this an involving story, quite far Disneyized cartooning or "Shrek"-like sentimentality. The music and sound are also superb.

Beautiful
The story is a little weak (generic) - definitely not Neil Gaiman's best - but the amazing animation makes the movie a must-see.
