Excellent movie, one of my favourites and one of Paul Newman's stand out performances.
Luke (Paul Newman) is a man who refuses to conform to society and is happy breaking the rules and living life as he pleases. Once convicted of a parking meter offence, Luke finds himself at a prison in Texas. A secluded country prison where Luke becomes popular amongst his fellow prisoners for his laid back, cool personality. He fits in well with them, however he doesn't get along with the guards - attempting to escape as he doesn't want to serve his time and finds constant struggles along the way.
I'll be the first to say that this is in my opinion, the greatest Prison film ever made. The Shawshank Redemption not far behind, but this was a masterpiece. Cool Hand Luke is a drama that is very believable due to the strong performances from it's two male leads - Paul Newman and George Kennedy. Both provide drama and comic relief to make this movie great. As this is a 2 hour film pretty much all set in the prison, the script for this film is indeed stupendous. The dialogue works on so many levels and to this day has some memorable quotes in it. It may be old, but Cool Hand Luke is definitely a must see for anyone interested in film.

There is a reason this film is often referred to in the same breath as the Hustler, the Sting and Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. It is essential and seminal Paul Newman. All acting, all drama with lots of comic relief. A movie devoid of car-crashes, gunfights and explosions it never-the-less delivers on entertainment value without stunts.
For me it is memorable the same way Eastwood and Bridges are memorable in Thunderbolt & Lightfoot

This is a brilliant move, but unfortunately the folks who put this on Instant Viewing don't have a clue because they put the Pan & Scan version of this film on. Until they fix that, rent the disc and avoid the download. Btw - they did the same thing...

I love it
This is a classic in the true sense of the word, a humorous and touching tale of one man's struggle against society and its harsh laws. For me it's one of Paul Newman's best performances and I believe it's a must-see film.
