CONSTANTINE: I have always loved watching movies starring RACHEL WEISZ, This is one of my favorite movies and I highly recommend it. RACHEL always give 100%, and her acting is always very convincing and spot on. I give this movie 5*****STARS.

Constantine is the type of movie that deserves an 'A' for effort, but ultimately it fails. It certainly tries to be a good movie, I'll give it that. It centers on Constantine, played by Keanu Reeves, a sort of supernatural detective who banishes demons back to Hell when they violate the "balance."
The plot tries to seem complicated, but really it's not. Throughout the movie I felt as though I was missing something, or that a major revelation was coming up that would tie up the loose ends. But, at the conclusion of the movie, I realized that I hadn't missed anything. I was just making the simple plot more complicated than it was. This sensation was, in my opinion, the movie's biggest flaw. The story itself was weak and the movie tried to seem like more than it was.
The acting was on par with most main stream modern movies. Reeves was well cast, playing the introverted loner quite well. Rachel Weisz was her usual talented and beautiful self. The rest of the characters were mostly filler, and many of them were annoying. The direction was amateurish, but that's to be expected from a first-time filmmaker.
The special effects were, for the most part, good. The visualization of Hell was pretty impressive, although more practical effects could have added a bit of realism. The sound design was adequate, but nothing spectacular.
The DVD was a fairly solid effort. The audio used the surrounds and LFE as much as possible, but the dialogue was frequently muffled. The video was spotless and very detailed. Black levels were deep and true, while the little bit of color in the movie also seemed accurately rendered.
If you thought the trailers looked decent, then Constantine is probably worth a rent. If you still have no idea what movie I'm talking about, then don't waste your time. For the most part, the public opinion was right about this one. Constantine isn't the worst movie of the year, but it also not the best.

I didn't know what to think going into this movie. Having just seen Cursed the day before, I was really hoping that Constantine would be better. It was. While some may claim this movie is sacriligious, you need to go into this movie realizing that...

I didn't know what to think going into this movie. Having just seen Cursed the day before, I was really hoping that Constantine would be better. It was. While some may claim this movie is sacriligious, you need to go into this movie realizing that it is based on the Hellblazer comic book series and not meant to be taken seriously. I really liked the pace of this movie as well as the concepts presented. The atmosphere of the movie was perfect for the feeling they were trying to convey and the angels and demons were obviously well thought out and somewhat believable. Keanu Reeves continues to do well in the only role he operates decently in. In all seriousness, John Constantine is Neo that is fighting demons instead of agents. Rachel Weisz is decent but not outstanding. All around a good movie. Nothing outstanding, but good.
This movie is R-rated and for good reason. Violence and blood is constant throughout this movie. Skin is melted off of the faces of demons with holy water, a man is killed by thousands of flys coming out if his mouth, blood covers the floor when Constantine slits his wrists. The main concern I have with this movie is when Constantine purposefully drowns Rachel Weisz's character to allow her to see hell and, when she comes back, to see angels and demons. I'd hate to think that people in real life might think they can drown and be brought back to see the spiritual realm.
Constantine is a good movie with some dangerous ideas. As long as those that see this movie realize that it IS fiction and thus should not be tried in real life, the movie is fine. I fear for those who blur the line between fiction and reality.

Maybe it was the lack of rules around what an angel or demon can do, or the ambiguity of John Constantine's gifts or perhaps the shoddy way the story is told - but Constantine just didn't work for me. What's with "Hell" and its inability to translate to the screen? Both Hellboy and Constantine suffer from trying to appease comic fans first, tell a compelling story second. Hopefully Doom will fare better.

It is what it is, and it does it well. If you come into the film knowing the plot (read this website's official synopsis) then you will NOT be disappointed. Slam-bang action, intrigue and--yes--drama. Keanu hits this one out of the park.
