Confessions of a Shopaholic, 2009

Legally Blonde gets a credit card and becomes Confessions of a Shopaholic. We've all seen this movie and the tired plot before. Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) was raised by penny-pinching parents as she watched other girls her age and their mother's use “magic cards” to purchase lavish accessories. As an adult, Rebecca has 12 credit cards, all of which are near maxed-out, yet she still can purchase $100 handbags. Debt collector Derek Smeath (Robert Stanton) has been trying to track her down for a year. She avoids him for a while through a series of elaborate lies. Predictably, he catches up. Rebecca is a journalist for a garden magazine when we meet her. No wonder she can't afford anything. Her dream is to work for Allete, a high fashion magazine. The closing of her garden magazine forces her to attempt an interview at Allete. She thinks a green scarf will complete her outfit and land her the job. She doesn't have enough money to buy it, so she asks a hot dog vendor for cash back on a check. Saving her the hassle is the next person in line, Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy), who gives her the extra $20 she needs. She notes he just paid $23 for his hot dog. He replies, “Cost and worth are very different things.” I wonder what Rebecca will learn by the end. We see the resolution to each problem 10 minutes before it happens. We know how the story will end, and we know how Rebecca will learn the difference between cost and worth. We only hope the interim is entertaining. The film succeeds in at least not making us check the time every 15 minutes. It's quick, painless and moderately amusing. tinyurl.com/av7e9r
