Similar to Crash or Babel, this challenging film is about a chain reaction of events spurred by a minor incident. The story has its moments, but overall it is choppy, cryptic and a little frustrating. It is like a simmering pot that never boils.

I am a Haneke fan, but this has to rank as one of his most disappointing films. It isn't that it's horrible; I felt like it tackled some important issues in contemporary France and I never felt like turning it off. It just seemed unfulfilling, disjointed and, most importantly, lacking in the extraordinary emotional power Haneke is usually able to summon up. Even for a Haneke completist like me, this film was very average and left me shaking my head, wondering why Haneke didn't pull it together as he usually can. If you hate slow-moving or plot-light films, you'll hate this one. If you like contemporary France or the work of Haneke, it has something to offer you, but far less than Haneke's other films.
