I loved this film. Tim Robbins, and Samantha Morton have a smoldering love affair, twice. I like to watch movies that take you to another place, or time. Samantha Morton (In America) is soooo gooood in this movie. She is beautiful and sexy, and impish, in a good way. At one point Samantha is given a virus by the government, a virus to make her recoil in pain to the touch and when she is kissed. Samantha then requests that she be tied up and forced into love making. Of course Tim Robbins agrees and Walla... At the end of the sexual tryst she is again able to kiss and make love without pain. This is a wonderful almost magical movie. Great Scenic shots of Shanghai. The sound design is excellent. The 5.1 Dolby sound of the subway, and driving in a SUV pulls you into the movie and makes it a wonderful experience. I highly recommend this movie.

After watching, I was shocked to come back here and find that the film was categorized as a Romantic Drama. Where was the romance? Robbins, the main character, clearly does otherwise-irrational things because of this woman, but nowhere in his acting nor the script do we see the development of his feelings. It's just assumed to be there.
The film fails as a sci-fi film as well. The opening of the movie sets the story as the realization of a recurring nightmare, a decidedly mystic touch, and completely irrelevant to the story. Other technological elements (such as the behavior of the empathy virus) are utterly unbelievable as well. At best, then, this is fantasy. But I'm more inclined to think of it as sci-fi that failed because the writers don't understand the genre.
Other reviewers seem to think that the premise of the movie is intended as an anti-Big Brother statement. Closer examination reveals that the travel documents that prevent people from moving freely have little or nothing to do with the government. Actually, they are "coverage", as in "insurance". The characters can't move around because their insurance won't cover them elsewhere. So if there is a lesson to be learned, it's not about government control of individuals so much as corporatism and corporate fascism.
