Cloverfield, 2008

This movie really wasn't that bad if you fast forwarded through most of it... The monster was pretty cool. The action was pretty good. All of the talking, running around, and deciding what to do was totally stupid. So, if you don't mind applying a liberal amount of the scanning, go for it. It'll make a fun 35 minutes!

The idea is cool. The execution is not. I did not care about these characters in the least bit and I did not believe the choices they were making at all. Also, the mediocre monsters (the little ones) were a lot tougher against the marines with guns than they were against the kooky group we follow through the flick which struck me as real cheap in the writing department. I didn't hate it but I'd flip right through the channel if I saw it on in TV land. 2.6 stars

Could be others find some kind of cinima art in this but to me reminded me of high school kids making a video with dad's camera. I found myself wishing for temporary blindness and contemplated putting ice picks through ears. Acting was good though i have to say but thats about it.

Spoiler Alert!!! I hated this movie. It was totally a chick monster movie! The love story ruined it for me. The whole notion of them going around the demolished city, then up 57 flights of stairs into the next building that had toppled over to try to find some chick the guy slept with once and then to find her impaled on a rebar..pull her off said rebar, she doesn't bleed out and then to walk all the way back down the building was re-damn-diculous!! Plus the whiny commentary from the "cameraman" was just stupid to say the least. The concept of the movie was cool, but make it 'R' please..PG-13 was a bad idea. Kill this movie with FIRE!!! the hype behind this terrible movie was way overdone.

Sci Fi horror isn't meant to be plausible; it's meant to be scary and to keep hold of the viewer. To that end, as long as one is capable of feeling empathy for the humans through whose eyes we see the destruction unfold, this works. Shaky-cam first-person POV is definitely overdone these days, but it works here because the events are overwhelming. There's no possible reaction to gigantic events other than sheer panic, and the ensuing confusion is conveyed very well by the glimpses we get without ever seeing a scene its entirety when the disaster is afoot. The characters are average young people suddenly caught by a massive, impersonal force. It isn't necessary that they be likable, only that they be human. Given just that much identification with the viewer, those with enough imagination to suspend disbelief in the particulars and instead lose themselves in the maelstrom as it unfolds will enjoy this film.
