I've been waiting to see Closer since I first saw the movie posters. I was completely captivated by the expressionless faces of the four stars. I still am. In that poster I saw four people so devoid of emotion that their indifference became like an emotion itself. In this respect, the movie poster was a perfect representation of the movie. On the other hand, the poster makes the stars out to be beautiful people. While they might be attractive on the outside, these four are some of the ugliest people one can imagine.
Closer is the story of four people, how they meet, how they love, and how they hate. Through a series of relationships their four lives become intertwined in ways you can only begin to imagine. Closer really takes a close look at love, sex, and the effects of cheating on your significant other. There's no beating around the proverbial bush here, so if you're sensitive about sexual topics, look out!
I thought all of the performances were good, but Clive Owen's stood out in particular. This man has an intensity that makes his style totally unique. Even during his quieter scenes you could almost feel the energy radiating outward form him. The more I see of Clive Owen, the more I want to see. Watch him in the strip club scenes, you can see the pain in his eyes, you can see the desperation.
Maybe I was expecting too much, but I was a bit underwhelmed with the video quality of Closer. Being a SuperBit disc, I was expecting a very high quality presentation. Not that the picture quality was bad, it just wasn't up to par with Sony's recent SuperBit offerings. There seemed to be an awful lot of background noise, so much that it became distracting at times. The audio was good, with clean dialog and excellent sounding music. The bass was nice and deep without being muddy, while the highs were crystal clear.

Closer (starring Julia Roberts as Anna, Jude Law as Dan, Clive Owen as Larry, and Natalie Portman as Alice) is the story of 2 couples (Anna/Larry, Alice/Dan) and how their lives are changed and effected by a love affair between a woman and man from each couple. It sounds confusing, but basically, Dan and Alice meet and fall in love, then Dan meets Anna and decides he's fallen in love with her instead, but Anna won't have him at first. Then, by fate, Dan meets Larry in a chat room and pretends to be Anna and gets Larry to come to an aquarium that Anna frequents. Larry shows up and meets Anna and falls in love. A year later, the two couples meet at a photography exhibit of Anna's, where Dan once again professes his love to Anna, which she then accepts. After that, it's a bumpy ride full of passion and betrayal.
Closer is an adapted screenplay written by the author of a stage play by the same name. This shows up in the screenplay and dialogue of the movie, which is a bad thing, in my opinion. I felt like I was watching a movie of a play - not because of the set or props - because of the dialogue spoken. On top of this, the words spoken between the characters are very explicit, which didn't seem very realistic. I could see maybe one of the characters talking like that, but not all of them. Out of four people, at least one would be somewhat reserved and morally grounded, you would think. I will give it this, however: even though some of the speech is offensive, the conversations are striking and well acted. I'm not really sure why Clive Owen was nominated for and won awards for his performance, which I thought was the least of the 4 players. And since I'm used to seeing Julia Roberts as a sweetheart both on and off the screen, she seemed to be miscast and out of place. Criticism aside, I thought the acting overall was great, and the cinematography was also very nice.

Gee...an hour and 20+ minutes of porn -- without the pictures. What a complete waste. Julia Roberts must have been of her rocker the day she decided to star in this one.

So so
I am indifferent about this one. It gave a very grim view of relationships but I enjoyed the acting performances. So So.

Sad
This movie made me sad with its portrayal of 'adult relationships'. I dont see life this grim, with each couple cheating each other. This one left me depressed and annoyed.
