This tourist attraction is a sugar coated topping, there is another world beneath it
City of God reminds me of every tourist attraction in the Caribbean. Tourists love the sun and fun but the locals try their best to scratch out a meager existence, and some turn to crime. It is the same whether it is Brazil, Jamaica or anywhere else...

City of God reminds me of every tourist attraction in the Caribbean. Tourists love the sun and fun but the locals try their best to scratch out a meager existence, and some turn to crime. It is the same whether it is Brazil, Jamaica or anywhere else on the planet.
City of God is the reality that people face then and now. This movie got better and better as narrator injected more of himself into the story. At some point I thought to myself that while the protagonist saw things as hell on earth for many it was just trivial news. The very notion that some lives are important and others are meaningless. That is the message of City of God.

You will cheer on the main character, loathe and hate the main villian and speaking of the main villian, a thug by the name of Lil Ze, the story of this character will creep you out, especially when he is a young boy and at the age of eight or nine murdered people at a beat down hotel and how this young boy murdered his way to the top of the criminal "Food Chain". This movie will leave you speechless.

This film really gave a good impression on what it must be like to live in the "favela." The DVD bonus feature brings the movie into even more harshly realistic focus.

I liked it, I liked it a lot actually, but some of the reviews I've read on here may be a bit over the top. I've even read it changed numerous people's lives... though I can't say I've experienced a transformation. It's a movie similar to "Crash", in which a series of events unfold which affects the lives of many people and we get various first-person views. There has been mentions of the violence even though I find it less violent than a lot of American films; also the violence isn't useless, it never detracts from the story it exists only to strengthen it. The story isn't complicated, the visuals are good, the acting is exceptional, I'd be hard-pressed to find anything I didn't like.

This one is hard to watch: a lot of violence, kids killing kids, murder for no good reason. there's a lot of poverty and crime in Brazil, and this movie shows you a very bleak picture of the situation in the favelas. Dramatic, disturbing and very...
