Summary of Cinemania

In this fascinating and bizarre documentary about five obsessive film buffs living in New York City, directors Angela Christlieb and Stephen Kijak take us inside the lives of their subjects, showing us their homes, their day-to-day calendars and schedules, and talking to them about the art of being compulsive filmgoers. Jack, Eric, Harvey, Bill, and Roberta are all afflicted with the same bug: they love movies, almost more than life itself. Each of them has a unique, and usually rather complex system for tracking what movies are playing in New York's theaters, at its museums, and in its festivals. With this kind of detailed attention and care, they sometimes attend up to five movies a day, carefully working in meals and transportation time. Interviews with each of the film's five cinemaniacs reveal some very interesting related topics. For instance, an obsessive moviegoer must be prepared for inside-theater climate as well as outside-theater weather. He must plan when he will have time to go the bathroom so as not to miss any of the film. In addition, these cinemaniacs have a very good knowledge of projection, color, and which prints of their favorite movies are in circulation. Conversations about favorite movie stars reveal the extent to which these five buffs live in a fantasy world, and they are unemployed in order to facilitate their movie schedules. A funny, strange, and quite unbelievable portrait of these five loners who literally live in the theaters, Cinemania will delight obsessive movie fans and casual viewers alike.

It's too short, and it doesn't delve deep enough. But it's thoroughly enjoyable.
