CHANGELING 2008
SPOILER ALERT
Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie) is happy when her young missing son, Walter is brought back home. But when Christine rejects the Walter who was returned to her, because he is now three inches shorter, and is circumcised, (Walter was not circumcised) the police captain (Jeffrey Donovan) has her committed to an asylum for questioning the LAPD. This is a story that drew me in and kept my attention from the very beginning. The corruption in the LAPD is blatant and open. Angelina Jolie shows the anguish that a mother feels when her son is missing John Malkovich co-stars as the good reverend who comes to Christine's aid. What I found absolutely astounding is that the LAPD thought that they could just take a different boy and pass him off as Christine Collins' son. The hubris/arrogance that they could tell this mother that she is not qualified to tell if it is her son, if the LAPD says it is your son, then it is YOUR son. This is a movie about a woman looking for her missing son, it also is a movie about the corrupt police department in LA. The movie is excellent, it does not strike a false note anywhere. What actually happens to the missing boy or missing boys I am sure you will find chilling. Yes there is murder and mayhem. The film makes no big deal one way or the other about the violence, it just seems to chronicle it, and it lets you be the judge. Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich turn in superior performances, as always. This movie was DIRECTED by Clint Eastwood, and the MUSIC, is by Clint Eastwood. This is a 5*****STAR MOVIE.

A true story. Not based on a true story or on actual events. Changeling declares all of it is true. And it is, making this story from the late 1920s that much more heart-wrenching and powerful.
Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie) is on a crusade to find her missing child, Walter. Her journey leads to and stint in a mental institution, and the uncovering of countless lies and cover-ups by a supremely corrupt Los Angeles police force.
Little-by-little morals overcome corruption, and the search for Walter shows promise. Another boy, Sanford Clark, is living on the Northcott Ranch illegally as a Canadian citizen. When he's taken in by police, he tells of the horrors done at the ranch. Up to 20 kids, one of whom might be Walter, were captured by owner Gordon Northcott (Jason Butler Harner).
But what did Northcott do with Walter? That's where the movie turns from an interesting build-up to greatness in the payoff. We've seen the struggle and fortitude Christine exhibits. Now we want to see the triumph. We're begging for it. Director Clint Eastwood makes us wait in agony, just like Christine does.
Changeling is about how people rally behind one in an effort to bring change. They've seen the injustices done to Christine and want desperately to see her victorious. So do we.
Jolie earned a ?Best Actress? Oscar nomination for this role. She's the heroine and victim all at once. The biggest problem with Jolie is that it's hard for an audience to disconnect the name from the character she's playing (i.e., Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, not Lara Croft played by Angelina Jolie). In Changeling she successfully transcends her name and becomes Christine. Five stars.

Decent
This film by Clint Eastwood doesn't quite reach the level of most of his other work, but is a decent film about a woman's struggle to be heard against a corrupt police department. Angelina Jolie did a fine job with her role. The rest of the casting seemed somewhat out of place and the child acting was terrible. The biggest flaw of the film was that it was trying to say too much. It felt as though it was trying to force the issue of woman's rights down our throats when it would have made a bigger impact if was handled more subtly. The true story that this film is based on is fascinating and yet the story seemed, at times, to take a back seat to Jolie's character development. The last fourth or so of the film could have been completely cut and it would have been a better, more direct film.
