Chain Letter, 2010

A serial killer is sending out chain letters and killing those who don't forward them, and it's up to our makeshift heroes to try to elude him. Welcome to "Chain Letter". While this movie is hardly the cream of the crop, it does manage to be entertaining in its silliness. If you want gore, it delivers it in spades. If you want a clever plot and originality, look elsewhere. What we have here is the same horror film formula we've all seen a million times, minus one particular trope (I'll leave it to you to try to spot which trope I'm referring to -- it's not a major plot point, and it deals with which characters get to live or die as well as the order they're killed in), with a chain-letter-sending killer as its gimmick. Take a group of sexy high school students played by 20-somethings, add a deranged killer who lacks any mercy for his victims, throw in a couple of poor attempts at twists, layer on the gore, add a dash of said gimmick, and you've got this movie (as well as about a million other films). Without giving away too much, I will say that the ending seems to suggest that the creators are trying to produce a Saw-like series, though a rather cheap imitation of the franchise. If you make it to the end of the film, you'll see what I mean. All in all, "Chain Letter" is essentially a silly gorefest -- worth watching if you have some time to kill, but nothing to write home about. I recommend it for gore fans -- it's no "Martyrs", but it's got plenty of blood and guts for you to gawk at. I don't recommend it for people who prefer atmospheric or psychological horror, or those who get squeamish about blood. If you like both, well, like me, you'll end up only half of what you want -- hence the 5 our of 10 rating.
