CENTURION is a ¿B¿ movie all the way. It¿s essentially a chase film ¿ routed by the Picts, a group of Roman soldiers in Scotland are fleeing for their lives -- and nothing happens that isn¿t predictable. There¿s no real emotion, human interaction, or redeeming feature in the acting, script or cinematography to rescue the film from mediocrity. Back in the 1950s, there were loads of low-budget sword-and-sandal epics, often foreign and very cheaply made, that reveled in battle scenes and gore. This film, which probably cost a lot of money and used a lot of technology, nonetheless rises no further than that old B-movie level.

As it goes for epic historical films, we usually get to see Rome in its glory days, in its fallen days or Europe a long time after it (Middle Ages, crusades, etc). This refreshing time frame puts us in Rome in the middle of the 2nd century, long...

As it goes for epic historical films, we usually get to see Rome in its glory days, in its fallen days or Europe a long time after it (Middle Ages, crusades, etc). This refreshing time frame puts us in Rome in the middle of the 2nd century, long after its glory, but yet to fall apart. The epic productions is nothing new in plot, with the master warrior and two major armies, but it has something artistic in its look, that makes this film more unique than the other summer epics. This film is no masterpiece, but it better than most epics, making it worth while.
