A really good film!
Why? Tom Hanks. One character, for 95% of the movie and he plays it perfectly. It never fills dull or long and his descent into madness is subtle. I always enjoy watching this film as it always seems to be engaging.

The scenes of Tom Hanks stranded on a desert island are the best part of this movie, the rest is pretty gooey. Once off the island, Hanks has a hard time readjusting to real life. It's sad. The only way he can have sex with Helen Hunt is if she dresses up like a volleyball. Three stars.

Seriously though folks, Cast Away is good, old fashioned storytelling, with quite a few bold twists (at least, bold for a modern day Studio Film) that truly do captivate. I watch it about once every two months and never get tired of it.

Tom Hanks delivered a fine performance in this flick. I could feel every emotion, every phase his character went through reflected in myself as the film progressed. Loneliness as passion, the palpable yearning for human contact, the blurring of the ingrained illusion of time. The cinematography was impressive, both the island and the ocean emerged as the biggest supporting stars of the film. A triumph of scenery as character. Another fine example of landscape in a starring role can be seen in Lawrence of Arabia. It's rare, these days, for a film to be made without the obligatory soundtrack. Hollywood is in love with mood music, sickeningly so at times. Castaway is gloriously free of this curse except for one small indulgence as Hank's character sails out of sight of the island.

I just finished watching this film about a Federal Express worker who's plane crashes leaving him stranded on a desert island of 4 years. Watching him survive thru injury,hunger and loneliness was very touching. He even becomes 'friends' with a voleyball, just so he doesnt feel so alone and has something to speak to. This movie was very entertaining.

A New Perspective
This movie affected me somehow in a very deep way. When Chuck, played amazingly by Tom Hanks, gets stranded on a desert island, he needs to learn to survive. But survival does not include just shelter and food but also learning to live completely alone and remaining strong and focused. This soul-searching movie gave me a new perspective on what is important and the power of the human spirit. I really would recommend this one to anyone, plus I love learning about survival- whether it for life or for the mind and soul.

A movie that takes place mostly in one location with one actor is bound to be unique. Tom Hanks is great (a bit after this picture he started making awful films, maybe being on that island drove him a little mad...). The movie is a bit long and if...
