Casino Jack and the United States of Money, 2010

Citizen Jack. If you only remember lobbyist Jack Abramoff as the guy who ripped off some Indians and dressed like a 1930s gangster, this will fill you in on the rest of the story. What is interesting here is that most of the things Abramoff did were perfectly legal. Unsavory and Machiavellian, but legal. If he had not gotten so greedy toward the end, he would probably still be on K street today. Ralph Reed, Tom Delay, Harry Reid, George W. Bush and countless others are skewered, shown to be cynical insiders, obviously in the pocket of the foreign and domestic monied interests that finance campaigns. (Ralph Reed comes off especially bad and I am shocked that he was able to avoid being charged with anything. That greasy little hypocrite should be in jail right now. At the very least he is shown to be a shameless manipulator of the religious right, playing on both sides of the fence when it comes to gambling interests and only really interested in lining his own pockets. His role in American politics as a moral crusader would be laughable if it was not so disturbing.) Anyway, conservatives come off worse here than liberals, but it is not necessarily a matter of bias, it is simply the subject matter. Jack Abramoff was a long time conservative and thats who he had influence with. I do not doubt that members of both parties play this game in our corrupt modern lob-ocracy and this movie not an attack on conservatism. It is an attack on the whole screwy system. Top shelf doc. Five stars.
