The way Capote and Perry circle each other is something else. Well done.

Philip Seymoure Hoffman in a role that was built for him: writer/personality Truman Capote. Honestly, I sometimes think this might be the single most impressive acting performance ever. Capote was a very specific kind of man. He had a very specific voice, a very specific mannerismÂ…he was as much a character as Rocky or Bullwinkle. So, it would have been easy for an able actor to simply mimic Capote and do something akin to an impersonation. But Hoffman finds humanity inside the enigmatic man (granted, that humanity is mostly that of an evil a**hole) and before two minutes of the movie have gone by you are fairly certain you are actually watching Truman Capote act in a movie about his own life. But this is even more than an actor simply disappearing into a role: this is not Jim Carrey playing Andy Kauffman. The stunning depths that Hoffman is able to reach subtly, with a turn of the head, while at the same moment playing such a large, flamboyant characterÂ…well, frankly, it makes me suspect Hoffman is an alien.
But it's not just about Hoffman's performance. The story (a true story, of course) is wrenchingly emotional, but played straight, without heavy-handed melodrama. Catherine Keener plays a sympathetic Harper Lee, a welcome break from the mostly heartless man that was Truman Capote.
