I personally liked the independent style of this film and would recommend it to people with a strange sense of humor, people that like "thinker" movies, and anyone that enjoys a bit of nonsensical chaos.

With all these great actors you'd figure this is a sure bet. It's not. Weird unrealistic characters that, try as I may, I couldn't relate to. Burn After Watching.

Sometimes, when I get lost in my own thoughts, I think the Coen brothers purposefully make a piece of crap every few years to keep their fans on their toes. Hitchcock used to do that too, I suspect. Call me paranoid, but how else to explain "Intolerable Cruelty" or "Marnie"? "Burn After Reading" made for a better trailer than a actual movie. It's a top shelf trailer and I suggest you watch it by clicking the above link and skip the movie. I laughed at Brad Pitt getting his lights punched out by John Malkovich, it was the best scene in the movie, but I'd already seen it in the trailer and it was edited better there. What should have been played for suspense - the Coens are modern suspense masters - is played as strained black comedy. Scenes go on forever, no one smiles, and I mostly just stared at the screen. It was as if after making "No Country for Old Men" they decided to toss off a crappy throwaway. (I've got to be honest here, I don't like the similiarly toned "The Big Lebowski", so I apologize. I've watched it, like, four times, okay? People seem to love this movie, so I assume I'm missing something but I just didn't think Jeff Bridges was a very funny pothead, what can I say? I didn't laugh. Don't make me watch it again, please.) Anyway, "Burn After Reading" comes off equally flat, not the usual Coen-y flat, and while I have no talent whatsoever for filmaking or story, I think if you locked me in a room for two days, I could come up with a script like this. Randomly bad things happen to randomly bad people, and then it all ends with - um, spoiler alert - the camera tracking back to an image of Google Earth. It was all a bunch of cosmic hooey, you see. It's comedy, get it? The End, Drive Safely. How hard could THAT be to write? This was one of 2008's biggest disappointments for me. (Thankfully "A Serious Man" erased all memories of this mess.)

In every scene there are two choices: 1. get out and all is forgotten or 2. stay and everything becomes more disasterous.
It wouldn't a Coen brothers film if any of the characters picked option one. The story isn't as crazy or intense as perennial favorites "Blood Simple" and "Fargo." Instead, this film mashes two worlds together: the high-powered, highly secretive and highly confident Washington, DC world and the shallow insecure world of those obsessed with appearance at all cost. The outcome is, as you guessed it, twisted and complex, but nonetheless fantastic. The final scene is simply amazing and, on a second watch, became even clearer how good this movie actually is. On a first screening, I was left confused, but on take two, the jokes are funnier, the foreshadowing more clever, and the overall script dazzling. This played more like a true comedy than the sinister comedies usually associated with these writers/directors. I recommend this to people who enjoyed "Raising Arizona." It's quirky, fun, sad, and the character foibles are strikingly true-to-life. Four stars.

Coen brothers on their best game here. This is a contemporary CIA spy comedy all dressed up as a serious drama. (Think "Breach.") The cast is just terrific, and the directors have underplayed everything just a hair which is pitch perfect for this sort of deadpan fun. There's a lot of naturalistic realism in the characters who get mixed up in something slightly over their heads, but unfortunately not quite as explosive as they may have hoped for---even if the consequences can be just as terrible for an individual. The audience has fun, too--a good time is had by all. (Maybe Brad Pitt should be worried, though, about just how really well he impersonates goof-ball lugs. Very funny.) A wonderful contemporary movie. I just sort of shake my head at all those people who gave it one star. Is it great art? Nah, who knows, but I loved it. Vive la différence; after all, I'm someone who gave two stars to "The Big Lebowski"---boring to my mind, but cherished by many. 4.09

Quite humorous... the best angry Malkovich I've ever seen. Pitt & Clooney had great characters too.

One of my least favorite Coen brothers movies now. While Fargo and others had often times riveting characters that you love watch on the screen, this ends up being a bunch of thin characters thinly sketched together into a relatively uninteresting story. Only Malkovich and Clooney were worth watching during their screentime and often there was little going on that led the plot in any direction. While Coen's were never ones to make fast paced movies, this one feels slower than their others and that led to moments of boredom for me. As with all Coen movies though, you'll need to watch and see how it pushes or fails to push your buttons.

It's pleasant and quite watchable, but anyone expecting more from the stellar cast and directors will be disappointed.

I always hated George Clooney, until I saw this film. Brilliantly acted and directed from start to finish. Let me say however, that those viewers looking for one character to root for will have a hard time with this film. Likewise, those who's like an ending that is tied up in a nice, neat little package will struggle to deal with it. If you can look past all of that, it's faultless. I'm not usually one for black comedy but this is an entertaining hilarious rollercoaster from start to finish. In spending the film trying to second guess the progression, I was unable to as it smashes all convention and keeps you on your toes.

Brad Pitt and George Clooney were always a great pair on the big screen. This time it didn't work for them very well. Maybe because they wasn't in direct interaction or maybe there is no particular reason. The actors are great and this is the only reason I could watched it till the end. In this movie nothing is clear and nothing goes right. The best parts, in my opinion, were the parts were the CIA boss report to the big boss and they are trying to understand what is going on. There is no logic and no reason but something is definitely happen. It's humoristic but not hilarious or to witty. If it wasn't for Pitt and Clooney I wouldn't watched it.
