Pandora's Box, 1929

This 1929 silent film runs for 2 hours and 11 minutes, and in its course, it simultaneously entertained and obliterated my misjudgments of old movies. I could say so much of it, it opened up a whole realm of film for me, and I was mesmerized. It was as if I was at the symphony, with the continuous classical score, and frankly, I wouldn’t want to see this with audio, anymore, it is the epitome of the old adage, “show, don’t tell”. Cinematically it is sensational, and never did I suspect I’d say that of black and white. I often paused it, to absorb and admire a shot. I had seen a smattering of silent films before, albeit very brief ones, and was worried this film would be silly and overacted, as the ones I was familiar with, and while PANDORA'S BOX has it's weak spots, overall it was well acted and not overly dramatic. Furthermore, I was thoroughly engrossed despite the sparse dialogue. In closing, if the "erotic" and "sexual" tags are worrying, remember this is 1929, and though it eludes, this film would likely only be PG by today's standards.
