Portrayal of trauma
The portrayal of trauma is astounding in the performance of Tobey Maguire but even more so the older daughter played by Bailee Madison. All that is left unsaid makes it almost hard to watch. This story is nothing new, but it is repeated in reality...

Why thank you *multiple characters in the movie*, I did not know that!
I don't know what happened in the transition from the Danish version; somehow the director took basically the same movie and somehow made almost all the characters unlikeable. The movie really doesn't work unless your sympathies shift from brother to wife to brother to wife.
It seemed too much like everyone was "acting", there wasn't much chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Portman, and they made a number of unfortunate tweaks to the original script (the ending mostly).
I think what happened is that the original movie is from Sarah/Grace's point of view, while the new one vacillates between the brothers.

A good third act saves a very mediocre remake!
I expected more from a Jim Sheridan film, and from esteemed actors like Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire. But most of the film is banal, the dialog is full of cliches, the plot is predictable and not convincing and Maguire turns out to be yet another one-act actor - spider-man, war vet or an odd teen, he plays them all the same. Luckily, the last 30min of Brothers are tense and emotional, and somewhat compensate for the many flaws. Thus, the film managed to get its 6. Rent the original.

This well-acted drama involves two brothers, one good and one bad -- at least in the eyes of their domineering and judgmental father. When the good one returns to war in Afghanistan and appears to have been killed, the bad bro starts getting closer to his sibling's wife and family, and in the process straightens himself out. Later the good brother returns, with heavy PTSD symptoms, signaling a sort of role-reversal in the siblings. The characters and family situations are believable, and the superb performances of the major players elevate a sometimes melodramatic and occasionally predictable script. This is a enjoyable film that's quietly, but energetically directed. One of the DVD extras is an interesting "making of" that compares this film with it's earlier predecessor, a Danish film called "Broders."

Thought-provoking and timely
A thought-provoking and timely movie about the war in Afghanistan, and the implications for both soldiers and their families at home. Well acted and moving. As it's a depressing war movie, I'm afraid it will be watched less than it deserves.
