Brick
This is a film that has great ideas, but unfortunately does not deliver.

Brick is, in all honesty, a well made movie. The cinematography is icy cool and paints the world in desaturated open-shade blue; the acting is competent, especially from Joseph Gordon-Levitt who is steadily becoming one of my favorite actors, and the idea of taking a film-noir and setting it inside of the high school social system is a nifty idea. So, why the low score? The movie thinks it is a lot cooler than it actually is, the characters speak in some sort of 30s-inspired hipster slang that is mostly unintelligible, and, worst of all, the film tries so hard to be in reference to classic film-noir that it ends up feeling like a poor imitation rather than a contemporary classic. The movie is a big throw-back to classic detective fiction, I get it, its a neat idea, but there comes a point where you are so referential that you become a wannabe. The bird motif, the femme fatale, self punishment, I get it, and it works up to a point, but do we really need to lift entire sequences of dialogue from The Maltese Falcon? An entire scene from The Maltese Falcon? I dont think so. Brick is ultimately a lesson in an idea carried too far. Instead of being original and daring, it ends up being derivative and so look at me Im cool, that its embarrassing to watch.

Visually orgasmic and drenched in stylization, Rian Johnson's Brick is, quite simply, a cool movie. Don't let the high school setting of this neo-noir put you off; it is devoid of drama and fluffy romance (noir to the core).
The movie is very fast paced, with an intricate plot, and classic forties jargon. This dazzling combination may confuse a first time viewer, but, like many greats, one will want to watch it many times over.
The score also presents a point of interest. The director's brother wrote it, often using what he refers to as a "wino piano". The sound of which is a fabulous compliment to the tone of the film.

I looked forward to seeing this movie based on many positive reviews I'd heard and read. I have to say I wasn't too impressed. I don't find high school students speaking 1950s cop-movie lingo believable. I teach middle and high school and don't hear terms like "take a powder" or "it'll be curtains for me" tossed around very often. Then again, maybe I'm out of the loop. Wish I could have enjoyed this as much as others seem to have enjoyed it.

This movie could well have been written and directed by its high school subjects. A complete waste of time, this amateurish Dragnet effort had just enough promise to hold off my constant desire to press eject and seal it back in the envelope. Unfortunately, I watched the whole thing - and when it was over my disgust over the time of my life I'll never get back outweighed my relief that I would not have to watch another minute of this movie. Do not rent.

Remember Bugsy Malone? The 1976 Prohibition Gangster Musical with Scott Baio and Jodie Foster? For some reason, I kept thinking of that movie while watching Brick, since each are crime genre films that take place in some type of alternative teenage universe. Actually, Brick's inclusion of some incidental grown-ups spoils the notion of a teens-only world, which I think works to the film's detriment. But Brick has bigger problems, most notably that it takes itself too seriously. As a Film Noir, it has to play it straight, but Brick has such overstated Cool Intensity that the film veers into self-parody territory. And I didn't get the feeling it was intentional. Anyways, if you're still in High School (literally or figuratively,) you might enjoy projecting yourself into Brickworld. If not, get your teenage crime movie fix with Bugsy Malone instead. It also delivers turf wars, contraband, inherent slang, and jailbait sex appeal, but in a much more watchable package.

I haven't seen a movie quite like this before - there are so many places to compare it, and none fit completely. Pieces of Lynch and Crowe, mashed up with a liberal hunk of a teenage Sam Spade - these elements combine to make a modern masterpiece I plan on watching a few more times soon. The dialogue alone makes this movie completely worthwhile, and the plot is convoluted and fun to guess at (you'll be wrong, trust me). See this movie. Now.

Way better than I'd expected - almost 5 stars. Joseph G-L can't seem to be in a bad movie. Memento like mysteriousness kept me rapt. I really like the unraveling of so many layers.

Usually it takes me a good half-hour to fall asleep while watching a bad movie. I made an exception for this one and was out in ten minutes.
