Brand Upon The Brain!, 2006

Guy Maddin does his usual shtick. If you've never seen a Guy Maddin film before, you're in for a surprise, and if you have, you know what to expect. What really makes this DVD unique is the 8 choices (!) of narration, 5 of which are from the live performances done with the film across the country. Of the 3 studio narrations, I liked Guy Maddin's (track 2) best. Of the live narrations, the viewer's choices are Laurie Anderson, John Ashbery, Crispin Glover, Isabella Rossellini, or Eli Wallach. I'm always a sucker for Crispin Glover, and Eli Wallach was awesome, but a quick trip to the film's official site tells me some of the probably great narrators that were excluded from the DVD, like Daniel Handler and Udo Kier! It would be nice if they made these other narrations available online in MP3 form, so people could experience those as well. Also, I'll never understand how Maddin assembled all these different narrators, yet seemingly neglected to call Werner Herzog, the greatest narrator of all time. All in all, even if you're lukewarm on Guy Maddin's style, this DVD is worth a rental just for some of the cool features.
