Boy, 2010

A kiwi tale about a boy and his brother, who were raised in a small town in beautiful NZ by their grandma. One day, their father, who has abandoned them when they were little (their mother died), suddenly re-appears. But although the boys welcome him back into their life with nostalgic image, their father actually has more egocentric sights in his mind, and uses the kids for his advantage, to find a treasure he has hidden before he got locked up. This could be an emotional and inspiring story, accept that our main protagonist, Boy, is just irritating. The father's character (played by the director himself) is slimy and mostly goofy, granted; but we should be rooting for Boy, and his character doesn't let you sympathize with him fully. He is cocky and self centered, does stupid things and all in all not very likable. And that's a big minus. His younger brother, on the other hand, is a gem. He is the one you relate to the most and wish the best for him, and he is the one who creates the moving and touching parts of the film, especially at one of the ending scenes.The little kid is the best character in the movie; but the film is about boy and his relationship with his conniving father, and that's less appealing. Boy turned out as a solid movie, but has a lot more unfulfilled "heart" potential in it, sadly.
