I so wanted to like this film, but I only made it through about 2/3 of the movie. The acting is not bad, but the story itself was slow, self-indulgent & mocking.

As I said in my review for The Life Aquatic, Wes Anderson's movies aren't for everyone. The characters in his movies are often very unusual and eclectic. His movies are primarily dialogue based with little or no "action." If a viewer can get around the fact that they aren't watching a standard, unoriginal Hollywood movie, they will probably find great joy in the banter of Anderson's characters and the inane situations they manage to create.
Bottle Rocket is no exception. Luke and Owen Wilson lead an outstanding cast. There conversations in the film are so natural, and so hilarious it's impossible not to love it. They both try so hard at what they do, only to fail so miserably. To sum up the plot, three friends decide to become criminals. They plan a few heists, and chaos ensues. The script is so perfectly paced and well written, it's almost flawless. Anderson's now trademark directing rounds out the film. The end result is a very human, very real, very funny comedy.
In my opinion, Bottle Rocket seems to be the most "mainstream" of Anderson's films, although it's far from ordinary. If I had to tell someone where to start with Anderson's work, I think I'd suggest Bottle Rocket. If you're looking for a wonderful comedy with great characters, look no further.
The DVD wasn't a Criterion release, unlike the rest of Anderson's films. The audio was average, nothing really stood out, positive or negative. The film focused on the dialogue, and it sounded clear and clean. The video was good, but not remarkable. The colors were rich and natural. The detail levels were high and the black levels were solid. Overall, a very decent DVD for such a low budget movie.
