Such mixed feelings... On the one hand, I enjoyed the non-preachy message the film presents, and I love how faith driven Eli is and how remorseful he is about the bad things he has had to do...but, I cant let my personal beliefs cloud my opinion of the movie as a whole. -- Honestly, the film is a mess, a mishmash of extremely well thought-out/filmed scenes, and other scenes that are extremely clunky and amateurish. Basically, I enjoyed every scene where no one talked, but once anyone opened their mouth it made me feel like I was wasting my time. Gary Oldman and Denzel Washinton, I think, did the best they could given the material, but Mila Kunis felt pretty out of place and everyone else was just sort of there. I get the idea that this would have made a better comicbook than it did a movie; the scene towards the beginning of the film, when Eli waylays a group of raiders inside of a tunnel, is evocative of this fact: The scene is shot completely in silhouette, and appears to have leapt straight of the pages of a graphic novel. I cant really say I didnt enjoy the film, because I did enjoy parts of it, but I cant say that I really liked it either. The Book of Eli is a mixed bag for me, that ultimately, and unfortunately, is mixed with more bad than good. Mediocre at best.

Title is defective: launches into copious advertising, during which menus, chapter skip are unavailable. I've seen this on other titles, mostly Disney & WB.

As with most Hughes Brothers films, the art direction and photography is all top-notch. I'm a big fan of post-apocalyptic movies, and you can see the influences all over the place. Denzel Washington is great in the film, but I didn't buy Mila Kunis somehow. She seems far too fragile to really pull off the hardened sidekick aspect of her character, comes off more like the Useless Chick. As others have mentioned, there is a strong religious aspect to the storyline, which didn't really work for me/ The film really hits you over the head with the messianic aspect of the traditional Lone Wanderer storyline, but maybe I'm just not well-versed enough in Christian traditions to appreciate that. The pacing seemed very slow to me, I would have liked to have seen more of the journey and less hiding out from Oldman's thugs. The twist was handled cleverly I thought, and Tom Waits is always great to see in a movie. I thought it was worth watching, but I was disappointed in the final product. It's nice to see some experimentation with the typical formula, but not every experiment can be successful.

It doesn't say religion is good nor bad, it just says religion is powerful, and in my opinion it does this good. On the bad side, the movie does need some suspension of disbelief, even after you accept its post-apocalyptic premise, but all in all, it is well made.

Wait for the dvd
A movie that begins with a man hunting down a cat and eating him can't be that good. The Book of Eli is no exception. There isn't enough action, and there's too much religion. I wouldn't recommend going to the cinema to watch it, but for home I...

to the jinni team
I like future dystopia and tough heroes but the movie's core plot is religion. For that reason my match was great but after I watched the movie I can say that it's so so :(
You also add religion related plot to the movie.

Gary Oldman was good in his role and it was entertaining enough during the first act but dragged on too long in the last two.
