This isn't as bad as you've heard, but unfortunately, it's not nearly as good as it should be. Sure, it works just fine as a run-of-the-mill interpersonal drama; the problem is, that's not what it's trying to be. If it was trying to be that, these people (DePalma included) would never have made the film to begin with. These actors and artists signed on to make a film of social conscience and emphatic statement; they ended up making 'Romancing the Stone'. There are scenes where you can visualize how a classic scene would have been shot, performed and edited. You can literally SEE the potential for a classic film jumping right off the screen. But it isn't here; it doesn't exist. Instead, things were shot straght-forward in an overly-lit, overly-acted, poorly scripted dramedy. For shame.
