Although this movie obviously played off the TV series, I thought that it was better than expected. Honestly, I didn't expect to like this movie, considering that movies based on TV series don't always work out when it's not made by the same people who made the series, but I think that this pulled it off pretty well, considering. I thought that it was an interesting, if too predictable, twist that all the characters had the same names as the fictional characters, while playing the roles of said fictional characters.

Well, I can say this: Bewitched was a heck of a lot better than I thought it would be. Let me get my bias on the table: I hate the original television show, I dont like Nora Ephrons work, and Im not a huge Nicole Kidman fan. So going in, I was prepared for the worst.
I dont know why I bother watching movies that I expect to be terrible. But occasionally, they arent that bad. Take Bewitched. It seemed to have the deck stacked against it, but turned out to be fairly enjoyable. Of course, without Will Ferrell, it wouldnt have been anywhere near as good. He was the perfect choice for the egomaniacal actor looking for a nobody to play Samantha in his remake of Bewitched. In fact, aside from her strange accent and perpetual whispering, Nicole Kidman was a great choice to play the new Sam.
Most of the movie wasnt too funny, but one stretch really stood out. Near the midpoint, Kidmans aunt puts a hex on Ferrell, causing him to fall in love with Kidman. Theres a five or six minute stretch where he is allowed to let loose, and we see the real Ferrell comedy shine through. Thank God, because at that point, I needed a laugh. Of course, Ephron had to ruin the run with a cute little montage of the couple falling in love set to some really horrible music. Speaking of music, you know youre stretching when you choose an REM song for your soundtrack. Yech.

Awful stuff here. It does not matter that Bewitched has all of your favorite actors in it, they cannot make up for the mess that is this film. Not being a huge follower of the original TV show, I can still say that it has very little to do with the Bewitched show. It probably offended quite a few fans of the original. I forced myself to watch it all the way through, and I barely made it to the end. The saddest part is that they think "clever" is simply having a soundtrack of all songs about witches. That is the best they came up with. This is just pointless and a total waste of it's studios money.

I'm confused as to why this sucks. Nora Ephron directing, two charismatic stars and a pre-built comedy plot. But oh...they wanted to get all post-modern and make it a show within a show within a movie! That's right, that's why this sucks. Too many...

But oh...they wanted to get all post-modern and make it a show within a show within a movie! That's right, that's why this sucks. Too many bells and whistles to allow funny things to happen. Oh well, at least Ferrell is making funny movies again. Kidman...um.
