Existential but Soulless
This movie hit all the right buttons for me - almost.
All the terms you have seen to describe it: offbeat, clever, mind bending, surreal, humorous, certainly do the movie justice. It had me intrigued from start to finish. I particularly appreciated the humor, so clever and subtle at times, though so overt in others that there were quite a few laugh out loud moments. Creatively, this is a work of art.
The nagging problem for me was that there was no driving point behind the story and behind the characters. If you're looking for a point, a moralistic punchline, you won't find one. It raises some questions, but doesn't do anything with them. In fact, its amorality is my biggest beef with it (but that's me, I like things to be *meaningful*.)
It's truly haunting storytelling. Nothing more, nothing less. It will leave you going through the movie in your head over and over, but this will not be the same as any form of emotional/spiritual introspection or reflection. As long as you weren't expecting that, you'll be fine.

Being John Malkovitch is everything one should expect when seeing a Spike Jonze film. I guess its one of those films you either love or hate. I, personally, loved it. Great If you like Spike Jonze. If you don't, then watch something else.... strange, quirky, funny, not to mention highly original. But this is not a film to be watched in a half-assed state of mind. No, this is one of those movies from which you benefit if you pay attention from start to finish. Trust me though, it's worth it.
I think I said it before.... but very very funny.

Officially the strangest movie i've ever seen.
John Cusack is a regular boring office employee and an amateur puppeteer; with a wife (Cameron Diaz) who lives at home and takes care of a monkey. He begins working at an office with a girl (Catherine Keener) named Maxine he sees as an object of lust, he is crazy about her and she is a constant tease to him with her looks and outspoken personality. Then one day he finds a hidden door behind an archive cabinet. He opens the door and enters into a portal, suddenly realising that the portal he has entered is the mind of semi-famous actor John Malkovich (played by JOHN MALKOVICH). He sees everything through the eyes of the celebrity in a constant Point of View (POV) shot. After someone is in the mind of John Malkovich for 15 minutes, they end up next to the New Jersey Turnpike bridge.
The plot of this film is just one of the most unique and strange things i've ever seen. The movie itself has a good premise and had relatively good actors too, however a complaint i found with this picture was the characters. None of them were very likeable at all accept maybe John Malkovich himself! I thought that they weren't really memorable and that was a partial let down for me. Though the acting was mostly good, they just weren't appealing at all. The movie spirals into many different stories and is very interesting, i like the fact that John Malkovich was in fact cool enough to accept this role because it's not like anyone else could play him better than himself and that this was an ambitious non-indipendant project.
Whatever is in Charlie Kaufman's head - i don't want to no. But i would say it's definitely a movie to check out as you'll walk away feeling enjoyed and mind fucked at the same time, something to talk about with other movie goers too.

This movie came out a while ago and I finally saw this, I was just into the whole deal. From the wacky science involving a portal into one specific actor's head to the backgrounds of the characters who know about the portal, this movie is just so great on so many levels.
All of the actors in this movie work well. Do I even have to say that John Malcovich is incredible in this movie? He goes from serious to funny and he does them all well. Cameron Diaz is somewhat unrecognizable in this movie, and she is great.
I know i'm overhyping it, but this movie deserves the praise. This movie is silly, outlandish and interesting.

Well, there seems to be only two opinions about this film: you either really liked it, or you hated it. It got off to a slow start for me but on the whole I found it entertaining and thought-provoking. The puppetry was simply outstanding! I have never seen marionettes manipulated in such an expressive way before; it just blew me away.
This is not a mainstream movie - if you can suspend belief and open your mind then I think you will enjoy it. If you give up after only 15 minutes, then you will miss some wonderful cinema. Not for the homophobic.

Charlie Kaufman's breakthrough script. An original plot about living in someone else's head. Though in my opinion this movie isn't as great as Adaptation or Eternal Sunshine, it's still very good and entertaining. the second half of the movie gets *too* weird and everything tangles up in a very odd way. Still, if you're looking for something original and entertaining, take a trip into John Malkovich's head!
