What a fantastically original idea. And it's obvious that the writers, Glosserman and Stieve, have paid attention to the details of the slasher movie genre, as they made this movie and all the characters live within the rules that have been, up until now, kind of the unspoken rules of the slasher movie universe. And for a cast of mostly unrecognizable faces, it was surprisingly well acted.
Make sure to watch the deleted scenes as well. The walking versus running race should have been included for certain and most of the deleted scenes actually add a little to the film instead of leave you saying "Well,I can see why they cut that out."

I would have given this movie 5 stars if not for the annoying ending. If you like horror films, you should find the first hour of this film hilariously poignant. That first hour is a funny, incisive tribute to the horror genre...I loved it. Oh, if you like mockumentaries, you'll like the film's format, too. I wasn't familiar with Nathan Baesel, but I thought he was excellently cast as Vernon--a kind, devoted murderer. It was a shame Robert Englund didn't show up more on screen, but he was good in his limited appearances. As I said, though, the ending badly disappointed me. Still, for any horror fan, I think this film should be in the must-watch category.

"Behind the Mask" is a nice twist on the slasher horror genre, enough of one such that even people like me who don't get much out of that sort of film will find it enjoyable. Here, we're taken deep inside the mind of the madman as he joyfully and meticulously plans the horror to be visited upon his victims. He brings such craftsmanship and love for his work that we almost forget what it is he intends to do at times. Nathan Baesel plays the antihero at his finest and the supporting cast and well-written story carry things along right up until the end which, unfortunately, becomes all too predictable precisely because of the whole set-up. Still well worth watching, though, if only for the best lesson ever in how much work goes into becoming a Jason Voorhees or Freddy Kruger.

I had to give it four stars just based on the concept of the film alone. I didnt know what to make of the film during the initial 15 min but as it moved on I loved the concept of viewing an insane person showing you his inner world of slasher/movie type killings. Some will hate the film and it has it's flaws but if your a horror fan or just love seeing something different then this film will have you hooked till the end. It lived up to what I expected and if you decide to see the film then watch after the credits for an old school ending. A crazy film? Yes, but entertaing if you choose to enjoy the journey.

I have mixed feelings about this. In all honesty, this should have been a straight horror comedy. But more than halfway through, they flip a switch and make it all horror. I think that all viewers will be bored with this because in the end, this movie BECOMES the horror movie that it has been spoofing for forty minutes. That's right, in the last half of the movie, they make a carbon copy of a famous scene from Friday the 13th (Remember the barn?). This is a missed opportunity - a smart attempt - but they should have stuck with one genre or the other and perfected their choice.
