BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD: A good movie. I enjoyed it very much. Two brothers decide to rob their parents jewelry store because they are having serious financial problems. Both brothers are missing the conscience gene. Rob your own parents? REALLY!!! Phillip Seymour Hoffman's wife is played by Maris Tomei, She is sleeping with her husbands' brother played by Ethan Hawke, he is unemployed, and a slacker. Phillip's character his named Hank, Hank gives the job of robbing the parents jewelry store the Ethan's character, Andy. Andy is dumb as a box of rocks, so right away you know this is not going to go well. Marisa Tomei is gorgeous, and her nudity makes this movie worth the watch, Remember she is sleeping with both brothers so you will get a double dose of Marisa. The cast also includes Michael Shannon, and Aleksa Palladino both stars of the HBO Hit BOARDWALK EMPIRE. This is a 4****STAR movie IMHO..

A dense, expertly crafted heist drama with twists based on character and motive, where so many worse movies would throw in flimsy con-man tricks. Everyone involved brings their A-game, but Philip Seymour Hoffman's increasingly unhinged portrayal of Andy is the most fun to watch.
With Sidney Lumet you expect some exceptional direction; his sense of visual composition and pacing here is razor keen. A remarkable film that merits rewatching.

This is a very tough view in several respects, telegraphed by its no-nonsense first ten minutes. It opens with shadowy but graphic sex and then some other rough stuff and harsh violence. Then it takes a breath, and backtracks to tell you what happened. (There is a coda of sex and bitter violence later, but not like the opening moments.) I am not quite sure if I totally bought Phillip S. Hoffman and Ethan Hawke as brothers, but that doubt aside, they work well together. In fact, Hawke has transformed himself, and it is his best performance in my book, as a dazed and desperate man losing control of everything. The movie shows a slightly seamy side of middle class life that is a highly memorable depiction of downwardly mobile adult children turning family dysfunction into something sadly pathological. But it is essentially a taut adult thriller, and a good one. 4.09

Decent story, but looked like it was filmed in three days. Hoffman does a great job as a fat, greedy, corrupt guy and Ethan Hawke, whom I'm not a huge fan, shows good emotion with his character, but the story was bland and not very interesting.

Marissa Tomei IS NAKED THROUGHOUT THIS MOVIE. I enjoyed that part of the film and overall enjoyed Before The Devil Knows Your Dead. The order of the film is pretty much out of order and the last half an hour has some of the most intense situations in film I have not seen in some time. I might grade this movie harsh since I love Sidney Lumet and had very high expectations for this movie. I read another review here that stated they enjoyed the film but they recommend The Lockout instead. I have to agree with that comment since this was a 3 1/2 star film at best and was not as good as other movies currently out there in the same genre. I guess I have seen too many heist/drama type movies and you might be better served not being a fan of this genre and might find even more refreshing. The movie take many twists and turns and the ending is somewhat surprising but overall I liked this movie but I guess I wanted to love it.

This film isn't revolutionary. These themes and this style have already been explored by the likes of The Coen Brothers, and it's very easy to imagine them directing this film. But for a film that treads familiar ground, it simply excels. Lumet employs his own immense directorial talent and employs his unique and very subtle sense of irony and style to Masterson's brilliantly vivid, intense, and morbidly depressing first-time screenplay. The lead performances are incredibly intense and the film features absolutely fantastic turns from Hoffman, Hawke and Finney; but the truly greatest wonder of the film is that three years after he won a Lifetime Achievement Oscar, much revered as the ultimate sign of retirement in the film business, Sidney Lumet proves that he still has the immense talent to deliver a truly wonderful, resonant, intense piece of cinema reminiscent of his golden years.

All right, all right, I know Sydney Lumet is a legendary filmaker, so I was expecting a lot, but I gotta say there was quite a bit I did not like. The acting is definitely outstanding, Ethan Hawke held his own with the wonderful Philip Seymour Hoffman. As a family drama, it was absolutely spot on. Hoffman shows the weight of being the oldest (and, as he mentions in one brilliant scene with Albert Finney, the least good looking) offspring of this family in every scene he's in with Hawke (the baby of that family). As far as the whole "presumably easy crime goes wrong" genre, I disagree with everyone who says the broken narrative structure is not distracting. The time-shifting really does not help the overall storyline. The dramatic tension comes from the family members' interactions, not by all that bouncing back and forth between different times before and after the robbery. Also, some of the scenes are soooooooo slow, I found myself reaching for the remote so I could fast forward them. I can understand trying to maximize Hoffman's on screen time but he has several scenes that could definitely be cut down or out altogether and the film would still be gripping. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could, but I'll round up instead of down since it really was a very gripping story.

The pace is a little slow, but the director builds interest by backing up in time to the days preceding the film's pivotal event, a scheme gone very bad.
