Profile of Becket

The mood of Becket is thought provoking, clever, and captivating. The plot centers around intrigues, a rise and fall, and religions or cults. It is a drama, period, and historical movie. Stylistically, Becket is epic and is talky. In approach, it is serious and realistic. The pacing is slow. Becket takes place, at least partly, in a church. The setting is England. It happens in the middle ages. Becket is adapted from a play, drawn from a biography, and originally a true story. The movie is known for being a Golden Globe winner, a classic, and an Oscar winner. Note that it includes mild violent content.

Summary of Becket

Academy Award Nominations: 12, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor- Richard Burton, Best Actor--Peter O'Toole. Academy Awards: Best (Adapted) Screenplay (Edward Anhalt).

Critics Reviews

Washington Post
It is a snapshot of a great actor in his prime and a chance for us to see one of yesteryear's great films in all its kingly luster.
Chicago Tribune
Becket, now richly restored, is one of those '60s British theatrical spectaculars that we always imagine as a bit better than they were.
